Living near London, I had the good fortune to visit Edward Burtynsky's Oil exhibition at The Photographer's Gallery this afternoon. The whole gallery covers two floors and is made up of huge square prints made from large format film negatives. The images are stunningly detailed even from close up, however technical details aside, it is the most thought provoking photography exhibition I have ever seen.
It highlights the human race's (or at least the developed world's) complete dependence on petroleum, the effect it has on our environment, the waste generated by our way of life and asks some poignant questions about sustainability and what will happen to our way of life when oil runs resources become scarce.
It addresses a number of uncomfortable issues, and leaves one with a dark sense of foreboding about the future of our species.........
