I didn't see any discussions regarding the LaCie 5Big NAS, I'm considering the Drobo S or the LaCie 5Big (empty). I would fill either one with my own drives.
But I'm concerned the network attached LaCie would be slower than the USB 3 or eSata Drobo. I would like to store and edit photos right off the drive using Lightroom, etc.
Has anyone got both or have tried them both and have thoughts on speed, reliability, features?
I have a couple of Drobo S. And I'm very happy with them. I use one of them as my main storage for my photo's. And I also edit my photo's from it. I use the e-Sata connection and it works really nice
I have a Drobo S (using FW800, not USB 3 or e-Sata) and Western Digital ShareSpace GB-ethernet NAS. The Drobo S is far faster and easier to work from than the Western Digital.
One month out of warranty (13-months of operation), the Drobo S power supply died (unit would shutdown by itself without warning). Luckily, no data was lost or corrupted. After paying an additional $270 to bring the unit back into warranty, Drobo swapped out the Drobo S housing and the power brick. All seems fine now.

In Europe they have longer warranty time Minimum is two year
I was a little disappointed that I was not given a reminder to extend the initial warranty before it expired. If you extend the warranty before the initial 1-yr warranty expires, it's good for another 2 years and costs $250. Drobo technical support was not forgiving despite being 1-month out of initial warranty.
