p.1 #1 · Developing mental problems from Pro Sharperner Pro

I have a headache - Nik customer service is the worst i have ever encountered! I cant get any sense out of them!

What I want to do is de noise the image and keep it as RAW so I can use the pre sharpener RAW function straight after.

When i try to do this in noise ninja and define they only give the option to convert to TIFF / JPEG. Is there any noise program that can process images and keep them as RAWS so I can then use the RAW pre sharpener function?

My head is about to explode.

thanks for your time,

simon.

The only way you can do this is to use the noise reduction features of your raw development software, whether that be one of the Adobe products (Lightroom or Adobe Camera Raw inside Photoshop), the Nikon software, Capture One, or some other raw developer. Only those will keep the raw as raw without generating a TIF, PSD or Jpg.

Specialized noise reduction software like Noise Ninja, Noiseware, Topaz Denoise, Nik Define, etc. only work on RGB files like TIF, PSD, or Jpg.

Nik Sharpener Pro doesn't not work on raw files directly either - not even for it's "Raw Presharpener". The reason they call it "Raw Presharpener" is because it's meant to be used as a a first-stage "capture sharpening" pass on a developed raw file (a TIF or PSD, for example).

It's up to you then what workflow you want to use. If you definitely want to use the "Raw Presharpener" function of Nik Sharpener Pro, your basic alternatives would be:

A. Use your raw developer to do any noise reduction and then develop to PSD or TIF for applying the Raw Presharpening.
B. Develop to PSD or TIF without applying any noise reduction, use a specialized noise reduction tool like Noise Ninja on the TIF or PSD, and then follow-up with the Raw Presharpening.

Whether to use the raw developer for noise reduction or not is a judgement call. Lightroom and ACR usually do a pretty decent job for low to moderate noise and in theory noise reduction on the raw data could be better than on a developed RGB file but for cases of high noise, many find the specialized tools like Noise Ninja are still necessary (and they only work on RGB files like TIF, PSD, or Jpg).

I hope that helps. If it's still not clear, please provide a little more information on your workflow and what software exactly you are using, especially for raw development.
