Back in the day when I shot Pentax (MX and ME) I had their pancake lens, which I believe was also a 40mm f/2.8. This was a wonderful and very useful little lens. I used it for backpacking, but I can imagine that it could be useful for street photography, too.
No too much interest here, but these types of lenses are very popular for smaller mirrorless formats and for certain rangefinder systems.
I do appreciate the concept of lighter weight, more compact short primes, however. I just sold all my overweight 'L' primes (again), but I am intriqued by the new EF 24mm f/2.8 IS. I am seriously hoping Canon follows this with a 35mm f/2 IS and a new 50mm f/1.4....
All the existing non-'L' primes short of 85mm are in serious need of an update. Canon has now ticked off 24mm and 28mm.... just need to follow through with the 'money' lenses.

We'll see...

+1, love the form and lightness of this tiny lens... i will bite one for sure
Considering canon just released the 24 & 28 non L's with IS for way more than that I can't see anything canon produce (especially primes) being under 300 bucks. Hell I bet if they did a 50/1.8 mk3 with the same optics but a metal mount and distance window (aka the mk1) they'd want more than 300 bucks for it
interesting. I wouldnt be that keen to use if for digital becuase the body is so big the pancake advanatage just isnt there for me. Maybe on a small film rebel camera it would be truly compact.

Pentax has a full-frame 43 mm f/1.9 mm pancake lens. Based on its disappointing performance on a crop sensor, I can't imagine what it'll be like when mounted on a full-frame camera.
This must have prompted Canon to release a f/2.8 instead of f/2 or faster pancake lens at that focal length.

I'd rather see an updated 35 f2 with IS (like the announced 24 & 28) and no bigger/heavier than the current. In the mean time, I'm happy with my 7 oz 35 f2.

What? You sold your 50 f/1.2? Gary.....you are the guru of the 50mm. What 50 are you using now?

I would not have it for free. Meanwhile where is the 24-70/2.8 and 200-400, not to mention long overdue updates like the 35/1.4 and 100-400?

Agreed. Besides, is this really going to be THAT much smaller than, say, a 35mm f/2? That thing is pretty small on my 7D....and I got it off these boards like new for well under $300...
