I think we are headed towards 240PPI or so desktop displays for the photo/ graphics industry in the not to distant future. It's rumored that the upcoming MacBook Pro will be around that and larger displays will likely follow.

that's long overdue.

my home pc is 15" 1920x1080 lcd. before that i had dual 19" 1600x1200 crts.

the pc my work gives me is a 22" 1680x1050 lcd.

i still like to resize to 1200x800.

I forgot to list mine: 2560x1440 27" NEC PA271W profiled with ColorMunki.

My browser (Safari) width is about 60% of this, full height minus chrome.

Large High DPI monitors are much, much harder to make because of the size of the panels. You get a lot more dead pixels for a panel that size.

So its just like the problem with building cost-effective large sensors vs. APS-C or smaller?
What a shame. I was looking forward to an affordable major upgrade to my 1920x1200 TN LCD monitor soon.

Are you sure that the panel yield/dead pixels are the real limitation? Billions upon billions have been invested in making LCD production as economic as possible (manufacturers have built 10th or 11th generation production plants), but I think there simply hasn't been much demand for high DPI screens -- 1080p has become the standard not that long ago. When higher resolution content (4K video etc.) will become more mainstream, I'm guessing that the LCD industry won't have problems to catch up to make panels with the same resolution.

Its traditionally been the biggest barrier. Same reason why ff sensors costs enormously more than even and apsc sensor.

High pixel density plus large panels are enormously difficult.
