in the US the 1541T list price is $667 the 1542T is $756. i do believe i made quite the, Ooops!, little price error. forgive me. the blood out of the rock they have found turns out to be yours.
I debated last year between the GT1541T and the GT1542T.
The GT1541T has greater weight capacity (17.6 lbs vs. 15.43#), is barely lighter (2.1 lbs vs. 2.2 lbs.), is slightly shorter when folded (16.1" vs. 16.73") and has shorter maximum height (44.5" vs 45.87"). I did not consider the maximum height with column extended as I remove the column (do not what a modified monopod).
I bought the GT1541T as it had the greater weight capacity and the others differences were fairly negligible. It was, and is, cheaper than the GT1542T.

According to both the Gitzo website, and to their catalog. Then the weight capacity (load rating) is exactly the same on those two tripods. 8kg or 17,64 lbs

Prior to purchasing the GT1541T I contacted Gitzo and was told the 1541T had a greater weight capacity than the 1542T and that it was a misprint on their site. It appears they never corrected it. If one takes the time to go to B&H's site you can still pull up the specs for the discontinued 1541T and compare to the 1542T. Several test reviews also gave the different weight capacities when they made comparisons.

It's obvious jus B&H that have a misprint on their site. Every other store I looked at have the real load capacity of 8kg.
Gitzo have 8kg both in their printed catalalogs and in their PDF catalogs. Not only the latest catalogs but everyone from 2008 until todays. And they also have 8 kg on their website and have had that for years,
It's also obvious that 8kg or 17,64lbs is the right load rating. All the other series 1 tripods that are similar and CF have 8kg. Like the 1541, 1531, 1540, 1530, 1540G and so on.......

I'm in the market for a tripod upgrade, and am a bit puzzled by the prices mentioned above, since I see a *new* 1542T selling for $550-$600 on a couple of different "mainstream" websites.
Does the $700+ price above include a ball head or something?

The item that was sold was a brand new tripod in its box with all of the box content intact. As if you bought it from a store. No ballhead.
Gitzo have recently redesigned most of their range and some prefer the earlier models, so when hard-to-find items appear they go for artificially high prices.

In Europe all the old versions sells with a discount. Often 25-40% lower than the latest version
