According to copyright law, "manipulation" isn't enough. It has to be "transformed" to the extent that it's essentially a new work.

Compare Franco Zeffirelli's "Romeo and Juliet" to "West Side Story" to "Gnomeo and Juliet" and you see the extent of difference that is "transformational" enough to clearly be a different work.
