I just bougth the 16-35 mk2 to go with my 5D. Love the lens, but hate the 82mm thread..
I have earlier used a Cokin P-wide holder (single filter) for the 17-40 L without any serious vignetting issues - with the 16-35 mk2 thats another story. There is a lot of vignetting at the wide end (19mm and below).
Has anybody tried to trim down the P-wide holder with good results? The Z-pro holder is quite expensive for my use, and the filters themselves arenīt exactly a bargain either.
I cut the last two slots off of a P holder with a hacksaw and then used a round file to alter the opening to a more rectangular shape. This solved the vignetting issues I was having with my WA lens.

The OP is refering to the 'wide holder' which only has one slot. It is in effect, the same as hacking off the two extra slots in the standard holder (as you explained). However, filing out the opening to a more rectangular shape might help (I suppose), but with a thread size of 82mm, I'm not sure that will be enough to prevent vignetting completely.
