How is the integration with the bottom of the body? Is it nice and tight and weather sealed? The grips on previous units let water get into the battery compartment.

So does it offer the improved near 7fps that the Canon Australia rep promised it would?
I know there is about 0% chance but I'm always optimistic.

Grip fits really well so from a sealing point I'd imagine it's ok.
I'm not going to do a Kai and pout like a bucket of water over it!
The joystick is pretty well placed so should integrate well for those who do lots of vertical shooting.
Havn't tried yet Skibum I'll let you know if there is any boost.
Only thing that's weird is the new battery orientations which I believe make the base now narrower with the batteries aligned in a tray of similar size to anyone owning a 1 series. Not sure if the mk2 was like that but totally different from say a 7D.

Just asked my Canon rep yesterday and he had no news about the grip, he must not be in the loop?

No apparent increase in fps did some shooting before.
Didn't do any timed testing just normal stuff and doesn't sound any different.
It is nice having the second stick..nice addition.

A narrower base would be nice. The add on grips often fell bottom heavy to me.

The knock offs are coming...... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140755377672

I ordered one of these as I won't pay what they want for the OEM grip as much as I need one. I had both an OEM grip and knock off of the grip for the MK II and the knock off was bullet proof..... The Canon grip on the other hand was stuck to my body as the locking wheel stripped out. I had to melt the wheel off to liberate my body from the grip.....

Besides, the knock off grip is "simple but not vulgar" acording to the EBay page.....

" Excellent process ,quality, performance
Vertax E11 battery grip has perfect performance no matter from the Process , quality or performance and function .
Shape : Simple but not vulgar , high end and elegant
E11 all build with black , more perfect shows the simple and elegant feature .
E11 grip uses the same raw material with the camera body , Through the sealing application , E11 has the same feature of waterproof and dustproof with the camera ."

Figures... I've shot about 5600 fashion photos in portrait orientation over that last few days. I can barely move my right arm from not having a grip on my 5D3.

It would have been easy for Canon to develop the grip long ago and have it in production long before 5D3 release. Why did they choose to have the development so close to the 5D3 date that any small upset would cause this delay?

Just picked mine up today but I'm not sure yet whether I like it. Nothing wrong with the grip, I just can't make up my mind whether I prefer the camera with or without a grip.

pictures.. or it didn't happen.

But seriously.. I'd love to see some shots of what it looks like. The standard canon press photos are kind of limiting.

it looks awfully... thick. i guess it has to be that way though...

price is insane, as expected. i'd like to try one out, but considering i have large hands and the 5d3's existing grip is quite beefy and comfortable i'm in no real rush.

I got mine from Allen's Camera Friday (when I went there, he said they still had maybe around 30+ available) and used it on an 8 hour event Saturday. Feels and works fine. It was hard getting used to the vertical joystick being in the "right" location but eventually I'll get there. The build is very solid. The base is "hefty and wide". The sideways pull out magazine was a bit strange at first but I'm getting used to it.
