If Direct Mode to the iPad isn't working (it works great with other cameras!) there's an alternative options of having the iPad generate the ad-hoc network for the Eye-Fi to connect to. I think you'll have to be jailbroken, but that is really far less intimidating than it may first seem. I do it with the jailbroken/Cydia app MyWi.
I have a good friend who uses a jailbroken iPad and loves it, but unfortunately he doesn't live close by for me to try it. That said, I might actually look into that, just because I'm sure the network broadcast by the iPad is stronger and more reliable than that generated from the card.
brett, by any chance are you using the "new" iPad (retina)? My one area of disappointment was that I never felt good about judging sharpness with my iPad 2 and Canon jpegs...
I used it with my iPad on my studio network the other day using ShutterSnitch app and it worked great with my D800E. I was initially frustrated because it took about 3 minutes for the first image to come through, but once they started it was pretty smooth thereafter. I briefly tried it ad-hoc direct and it worked but can't say if I have a lot of confidence or not. I just didn't use it that way enough.
I haven't tried it with Eye-Fi's iPad app yet as I didn't like the way the app added everything to my photo stream. I hate how Apple has deprecated my Galleries (which I used quite a bit to share with clients and models in private password protected galleries) into a single stream...but that's another thread.
Sandisk Europe have just been on the line to me - apparently there are issues with the D800 and connecting to the iPAD using direct mode. The camera is not compatible with the system won't allow a network to be set up and requires a firmware upgrade - apparently from Nikon.
The Eye-Fi works fine for me through the home wireless network.
Copy of mail I got from sandisk Europe earlier today.
"Regarding to our conversation, Eye-Fi engineering has found and confirmed a compatibility issue with the Eye-Fi card that impacts the use of Direct Mode in the Nikon D800. We are currently investigating an issue with the D800's SD slot that appears to contribute to a lack of steady signal while the Eye-Fi card is in Direct Mode which makes the Direct Mode feature incompatible with the camera. The Nikon D800/D800e passes all other wireless network tests and is compatible with wireless transfers via a wireless router"
im REALLY thinking of jailbreaking my iPad 2 before my shoot this afternoon in order to get the My Wi app to create an ad hoc network from my iPad...
anyone done this, as it relates to the D800?
i probably wouldnt be so tempted except yesterday i shot tethered in the studio and (once again) was really impressed with how smoothly the D800/eyefi x2 pro/imac creating an ad hoc network played together. its very herky-jerky with my canon...
