A few mixed bag shots from my trip to California back in March. All were taken at Crystal Cove, except the last one. Handheld using 7D and 400mm lens.

1. Greedy Gull - This gull seemed determined to take what was left of this carcass apart. It looked like it could have be a godwit a day or two earlier. Wasn't much on it left to consume.

2. Tern - This flock of terns was hovering over a school of fish, just off the beach. Individuals were diving as they selected their target. Of course the sun was on the other side of them, making for an exposure challenge. They were lots of fun to watch, and I have a fair collection of mediocre images of them hunting.

3. Tern - I was going for a silhouette on this shot

4. Batman Tern - Lots of energy being exerted to hover, and this one was fully stretched. Reminded me of batman for some reason (one of the more recent versions).

5. Shadowy Heron - I liked the way this looked in person, with the bird almost blending in with the background due to the heavy shadowing on it. The camera couldn't do it justice. Taken at San Joaquin.

That light/shadow on the GBH is darn cool Ken!, well done in difficult light and you brought out a secluded mysterious feel in it.

#2 has wonderful form, in a case like this you are going to lose the BG detail so you can even go further with more exposure to record the bird properly in exposure and deal with a very white BG which at times can look very cool!

Yes, we are an odd lot in that foreign country you visited. Glad you found some familiar residents to photograph. Nicely done with #4 being my pick.

Nice work Ken. I like what you did with the strong back lighting, you made the best of the situation. The GBH is my pick of the set, I like the mood the shadows impart.

Thank you Don. I very seldom make any sort of print from my pics. A wall sized one would take some mulling over.
