p.1 #5 · is anybody Collecting digital Cameras, Bodies?
I meet with a group of photographers semi-regularly who are also collectors of other various things and the mind-set seems to be that digital cameras are to use and throw away (or sell) when done - but not interesting to collect.
I guess if camera design takes a turn for the stupid like based on some sort of technology which doesn't require a lens at all or etc., then they might become collectable. Otherwise I doubt it. <shrug>

Except for some historical significance, I can't see hardly any modern items really being collectable, at least not in the traditional sense of the word.
Is anyone going to have a shelf displaying a Canon Digital Rebel as a bit of retro kitsch ?
Is anyone going to have a room dedicated to their collection of laptops with a P90 IBM displayed next to a Dell 15" model etc ? Probably not
Is anyone going to take a 2005 Toyota Carolla to a car show in 30 years and compete in "show n' shine" like people do with the so called "classic" cars of the 60's and early 70's ? Probably not
Is anyone going to have a Sony BluRay player on display on the top of a bookcase in the same manner I've got an old 8" reel to reel movie projector ? Again, probably not
Nearly everything we buy and use these days is disposable, quickly outdated and lacking in terms of true style and soul.

Usually collectible items need to have some mechanical precision component. Maybe when all cams will be mirrorless a DSLR with the moving mirror will become a fine mechanical instrument.

I think people collect what makes them melancholic, so we have to wait a generation or two before people start to collect digital cameras. To some extent, it has already started slowly. I know of one or two people who have small Kodak DSLR collections, and so on. Soon we will have people collecting Nikon D1, D100, Canon 1D, 1Ds, and so on.
