So I've been using backblaze for a while for offsite backup. Recently it started to really slow down my computer so I contacted them. After some to and fro they suggested that I uninstall and reinstall the software. I was a touch concerned by this (I've got about 3TB of data with them which has taken ages to upload) and double checked that if I did they'd be able to reconnect me to my data.
So it turns out they were wrong and now there's nothing they can do about it. Apparently the "Silver lining is that I shouldn't have any more slowdowns".
Thanks backblaze for loosing all my data.
Alex
ps. going to bed tonight a touch worried and really hoping my drobo holds together until I can work out another offsite solution. Feel totally let down by backblaze.
Edit: Just to add if you're reading this for the first time. Backblaze has still lost my data however the CEO Gleb has been in touch and they have attempted to make things right. While I'm still annoyed that they lost my data I do appreciate the CEO stepping up, accepting things went bad and trying to help.
Yeah currently trying to upload to crashplan. Their bandwidth sucks though, I have 15Mbit up but can only get about 3 to them, going to take 2 months to upload it all.
Nope backblaze haven't offered me anything. Really pissed, despite having RAID here it just makes me feel very vulnerable and I need to get a solution together quickly.

Hmm Crashplan used to have a TB hard drive pre-seed option but I can't find it on their site anymore, maybe email them to see if they still do it.

Yeah they still do that, it's US only though. I've tried asking if I can pay the shipping to the UK but apparently not
u sure they LOST your data? U sure they simply didn't lose the ability to "sync" your data wit the data on your computer? It would NOT make any sense that your data (on their servers) would be deleted by you reinstalling the application.
Have you tried to sign in to their site with your credentials and look at the restore area to see if the data is there? My guess is that there's a failure to communicate. I bet what was lost is whatever tells Backblaze that you know THAT PILE OF DATA THERE = THE DATA ON THIS DRIVE HERE. Sure that may mean that they'll want to re-upload your data, which is no fun... but it doesn't mean your data is lost. After all I seem to remember that they keep data for an offline drive for 1 month...
I'm really hoping it's on their server somewhere or at least they have a backup of it!
Yeah I've tried signing into my account. The new install has completely wiped over the old one and it now says it's beginning it's initial sync. My heart sunk when I saw that...
I'm a Backblaze customer - and this just sounds weird to me?
I had to reinstall the client once, and initially it too said I had to resync everything, BUT their back end was smart enough to know that all my files already existed, so the sync was more an effort to reindex my drive, and connect the dots with my data that was already sitting on their servers. It didn't trigger an upload of all my data again.
I would try and reconnect with support. Good luck!
Thanks for the support guys, I've just ordered a new 4TB disk which I'll fill and leave at a friends place. In the mean time I'm really hoping Backblaze hasn't indeed lost it all and will be able to reconnect me. Currently waiting for a reply to my last email asking them to escalate the issue but this was the previous one from them...
"Hi Alex,
Unfortunately, there isn't anyway to reconnect you to the data. Uninstalling with the Backblaze uninstaller should have disconnected you from your old backup. Then reinstalling would have started a new backup and 15 day trial. I would have then had you transfer the backup state which would have reconnected you to the backup. I was hoping that that would then help with your bztransmit issues, but instead when you reinstalled, it overwrote your old backup. The only thing to do now is to re-upload. The (only) silver lining is that now you have a completely fresh install and that should correct the bztransmit issues you were seeing previously. I'm sorry that there isn't more that I can help you with in this instance.
Sincerely,
Ken"
All images are on our in studio drobo. Raws, edited and album designs with the images. We upload all finished images to zenfolio. So there is backup 1 of finished files. We have a 2nd drobo that we set to sync drobo 1 every week that is stored off site at my inlaws house. I have a 3rd drobo at my parents house that I remote in to and send new files. The connection is just as fast as using any other offsite storage facility. The best part, if it is going to take a long time to upload, I just drive there and move the files on the drobo myself.
I like this setup because I have complete control on all aspects of it and have 3 copies of everything and an additional copy on zenfolio just incase a bomb is dropped on my city and we lose all 3 locations
O yea, and no additional monthly or yearly fees like with most places.
I am using something similar to nick but I also use carbonite to backup my data at 58.00 a year for a private account I can have it backup all of my images. Along with Smugmug holding a current copy and a offsite portable drive backup.

Great setup. Super expensive though. Backblaze is just $50 per year for unlimited space.
