I'd like to add a TC to my kit bag to pair with my Canon fd mount Tokina AT-X 300mm f2.8 SD lens. There appears to be a quite bewildering choice available. Does anyone have any recommendations as to what to go for, or perhaps more importantly what to avoid?

I'd go for original Canon FD 1.4x-A and 2x-B and avoid everything else.
Thanks for the reply. I thought the A TCs were for lenses of 300mm and over, and the B ones for under 300? If so, will there be performance issues putting a B convertor onto a 300mm prime?
srhphoto: I had the Tokina 300mm f2.8 back during the 80's, along with the Tamron 300mm f2.8 (Model 60b IIRC). The Tokina shipped with a 7 element 2X T.C. as part of the package, their own brand. I do have one left over that has an FD to EOS conversion done, and if you want, I can send it over to you, no charge/no cost. It is just sitting in my dry cabinet, looking sad and for a good home . Seriously, if you want it, just send me a PM with your shipping address, and I will get it across the pond.
I bought myself the extenders 1.4x-A and 2x-B to use with my FD300. I did some very quick tests with the 1.4x, but I don't know what to expect exactly.
I know that some IQ is sacrificed using an extender, and indeed my results with 1.4x (on NEX-5N) show slight purple and green fringing, especially in corners. Without the extender, I have never seen even the slightest hint of fringing from the Canon 300. The sharpness, while still good, isn't even close to the crispness without the extender.
My question is, is there any significant sample variation with these extenders? Has anyone tried multiple copies of the extenders and found one to be better than another?
And also, has anyone tested using a newer generation EF extender with the FD teles?
I'll show some samples later, need to take better shots than the tests I did today.
Yeah, I use my FDn 300/2.8L with a number of 2x TCs and besides the weaker of the three Kenkos I see ZERO difference! The Tamron, the 2a, the 2b, and the two good Kenko models produce identical results on the m4/3.
I usualy reccomend the Canon ones tho... just because everyone else does..
