Very high pixel density and APS-C format sensor , the lack of a vibrating mirror system
and the excellent way of live view focussing with the help of focus peaking makes the
Nex 7 a lovely macro camera.
The new Sigma OS 150 mm macro works terrific on the Nex 7 with the LA-AE2 adapter.
Autofocus and OS functions as intended. Also with a new Sigma 1.4 x extender attached.
Without the extender no micro adjustments where required for the AF. With extender I had
to adjust to -1.
With the LA-AE1 adapter autofocus does not work properly with this lens. However the OS system works still good.
Although I planned the combination for taking pictures of insects in flight I shot a more static subject today.
From tripod, ISO 100 2s f/8. Second image ISO 100 3.2s f/11. Third image ISO 1600 1/30s f/5.6.
The Nex 7 will make diffraction visible from f/5.6 onwards with topgrade lenses. The Sigma 150 OS performs optimum at f/5.6. With 1.4x extender f/8.
Even higher apertures have been chosen here as a compromise between softening and depth of field.
The Nex 7 raw images require some serious sharpening from my personal perspective.
In Lightroom and Photoshop a good start for capture sharpening can be 45-60 / 0.6-0.7 / 70-90 / 10-20. (amount/radius/detail/masking).
This leaves room for some extra sharpening after all the processing has been done in Photoshop.
Be very conservative with noise reduction. It will spoil detail.
For the Nex 7 good exposed images to ISO 800 or even 1600 are very useable with some modest color noise reduction.
For top notch quality stay below ISO 400 or take the shot anyway if it is interesting.
Looks great! Glad to hear about the adapters, too.
I've got the non-OS Nikon version, and I've been really happy with it with the NEX-7, too. It makes for a much more satisfying macro shooting platform.
