I just sent in a Canon 70 - 200 f/2.8 lens to Canon in Irvine for repair, and received a $400.00 estimate.
The lens has no issues, has not been dropped, but the front of the lens (from the focus ring forward) has come a bit loose and is wobbly. It seems like Canon is just doing a flat repair charge now on lenses regardless of the issue.
Has anyone else experienced this, or is there another repair business to send the lens to? $400 just seems like an incredibly high charge for tightening screws and a brief focus check. I called Canon, and their response was basically "that is our flat rate. Sorry."
you might be lucky: if just the front of the lens (where the red ring is) is loose, you can pry back the focus rubber and tighten the screws to fix the issue. But, the front 1/3 of my lens wobbles.
I sent in my 24 - 70/2.8 about 6 months ago, and had a new filter ring and they replaced the internal focus gears, and the cost was about $200, which seemed fair.
$400 for a working lens that is a bit loose seems very, very expensive....
They have had flat, minimum repair charges for a while. What these actually are vary depending on who you ask and what lens we are talking about. About 8 months ago I asked about sending my working 50L in for a through checking and the rate was about $220. I thought this was too high and decided not to send it in.
$400 to fix what you describe does seem awfully high though. I would call around to different service centers to see if I could get a better price.
$100+ flat rate to fix a 580EX flash x2 (meaning $200) a few weeks ago...it was stated a flat/basic fee for service for them, maybe the same for L lenses now...
Yeah, I just got my 70-200 2.8 IS back from them. I had to pay close to $300 just to replace the rear metal mount and get a calibration. I also sent in my old 580ex since it was not firing. I remember talking to them before WPPI, and they said that all flash repairs are like $75, but they ended up charging me $100+ for it. This is all with the gold discount as well.

I paid that much and I cancelled my cps the last year. I don't understand why I would have cps and get no discount.
Another thing, they NEVER notify me about the shipping and no information shows up on their website when you enter the repair number & zip code until after the first delivery attempt.

Rick: the wobble is pretty significant, as it is 1/3 of the lens that wobbles. Almost like the screws inside the lens holding it together have loosened up and the lens is slowly coming apart.
I would use tape on a $400 flash for holding plastic together, but not on a $1500 lens.....

have had the same issue on mine for years now. sent it once and it just loosened up again 3 months later. put tape on it and ever since have never had a problem.
as mentioned, you can pull back the rubber and try to tighten the screws yourself.
If I remember correctly, isn't there a box on the repair form that you have to check to pre-approve billing for up to $400 on repairs through CPS when you send them in? I have 2 lenses and a flash to send in and the idea of a $1000 bill kinda frightens me, especially, when the two lenses work, but need calibrating so basically they are useless due to softness. Nikon anyone?

I just sent in two 580EX flashes; one was impacted and would not fire. The other was only a missing AF assist cover, but worked fine otherwise. The flat rate was $140 each, less my 30% discount brought it back to $118 each. The repairs were pre-approved by me and I had my flashes back in 2 days from being checked in at Canon.
Concerning your 70-200 lens, of course you have options. For me, I have peace of mind with CPS and will pay whatever they tell me it will cost, knowing I will receive it back in 2-3 days repaired properly with a repair warranty. I look at it with the mindset that #1 it's cheaper than buying a new one and #2 it's the cost of doing business. Does it sting, yes. Is it necessary, yes. Not sure what your CPS level is, but with Gold level - which is worth every penny IMO - if you average out the cost of this repair with your free clean/check of two bodies, pro rush, pro discount and overnight shipping, it all works out.

This has always bothered me. I've called and asked about it and they have no answer. Before I would get an email with a repair number, now i get nothing.
I had this happen to my 16-35L, noticed it at the beginning of a wedding, focus seemed ok so shot the rest of the wedding. Took it in for repair at my local repair place, equivelent of $30 to put the screw back in. The screw which had fallen in between two of the internal elements (eeek), oh and he did it with a next day service.
