p.1 #1 · Question about Elinchrom Quadra & Rotalux Softbox for weddings
I use Elinchrom Quadra A heads for my off camera light source at wedding receptions. I also do a lot of on location portraits and recently have purchased two of the (smaller) 27" Rotalux softboxes for the heads. They work wonderful for location shoots and I really love them.
My question is, will this softbox greatly narrow the spread of light if I keep them attached at wedding receptions? I have two, one will be pointed towards the dance floor on opposite sides of the head table. I plan on only using the single interior diffuser attachment. Will these two lights give me enough spread to cover a normal sized dance floor and maybe more or will it be more like two spot lights? If that's the case, I'll stick to my umbrellas.
I also have a single Bowens 250 monolight that is quite powerful that I'm considering using this year at venues where I have an electrical outlet. I have a nice 43" umbrella for that light that creates very nice, spread light. Would it be way too much to use both Quadra heads and this monolight on the other side of the dance floor?
Any suggestions and insight would be greatly appreciated. This is going to be my second year shooting as lead photog and I've really learned the importance of my light sources at these receptions. I'd like to get this down perfect. Thanks for reading and thank you for you time.
p.1 #2 · Question about Elinchrom Quadra & Rotalux Softbox for weddings
You are probably best posting this in the wedding forum. I and most photographers I know just use bare speedlights, any softbox or other large modifier sends light all over the place and are quite obtrusive. All personal preference though, some people like to light up the whole room with flash and others like to bleed in some ambient and keep the atmosphere.
p.1 #3 · Question about Elinchrom Quadra & Rotalux Softbox for weddings
Softboxes and umbrellas are too obtrusive to be left set up at a reception. And the umbrella or Octa is not really going to give you much in the way of soft diffused light at any kind of distance. The small quadra reflector will give you plenty of spread, and without the reflector you have a bare bulb. It doesn't get spread much wider than that!
