If you will use it then yes . if not then No.

It makes a great walk about lens. and the IS offers more than the 1 stop advantage of the 2.8 (for still subjects)

I had both when still shooting the 1D series and used 24-70L most of the time. The faster opening speed and color consistency with the 70-200L/2.8IS that I also used were main reasons to work mostly with the 24-70L. But I do agree the 24-105/4.0L IS is a great allrounder and wonderful for travelling as a one lens does it all solution. I liked the range very much for full frame and I have to say it's still a tempting idea to buy the lens back. I didn't until now cause I still have good hopes there will be a 35-105/2.8 like lens for EF mount in the near future. It would be the non-cinema version of this 2.8/35-105 lensThat would be a great replacement for my 24-70L and take away the desire for the 24-105L.

For what you do depends on your shooting style and needs. I know quite a few people who did the opposite of what I did, sold the 24-70L and bought the 24-105L. I can perfectly well understand because the 24-105L is great allround EOSfun for your mark III

p.1 #4 · should i keep the Canon 24-105 f/4 if i have the 24-70 f/2.8 ?

I decided to try out the 24-105 f 4 L IS when it first came out, and then decide if I should keep my well loved 24-70 f2.8 or the then new zoom. My trial is still going on some 6 plus years later, because I could never decide which to get rid of. I use which ever one fits the best for the situation I am in. I particularly like the brighter view of the 24-70 when I am composing indoor flash shots, because I can see the focus much better. And its image quality is very good even when near to wide open. I value the 24-105 for its range and IS for non tripod outdoor work and walk around needs. When I am on a tripod outdoors, either works great when stopped down to around f 8. My only question right now is how much better the new 24-70 II will be, and if I should consider a moderatly expensive upgrade in that direction.

I had this same dilemma, since I ended up with a kit and also have the 24-70 f/2.8L. I figured I would sell it on straight away. However, having taken it on holiday -- traveling around the southern and western coasts of Portugal for two weeks -- I can say it makes an excellent travel lens. I shot over 1,700 frames and didn't use the 24-70 once; never really missed it either (save for a few times where I'd have preferred it's shallower DOF). In fact, despite also having the 16-35 f/2.8L and 70-200 f/2.8L IS in my bag as well, over 80% of my shots were with the 24-105L. As of now I will be keeping the lens for these types of travel/walk-around situations ... Although I don't see it as a replacement for the 24-70.

I was in the same boat but after 3 years I bit the bullet and sold my 24-70 but I bought another copy since I thought I missed it so much. After a few months of using the second copy, which was really as sharp as the first one, I decided to sell that again since it didn't get used much. Unless the Mark II version is proven to be really a superb performer, I will stick to the 24-105mm for travel and its IS. Had Canon put in an IS in the new Mark II, I would buy it in a heart beat. Too bad, they didn't... .

I think the benefits of each lens are well-documented.
You should keep both and figure out if you can live without one.

You might want to start a poll to get the one perspective you can't without actually selling it:
How much do you miss your 24-105 after getting rid of it?
or
Did you regret selling your 24-105?

I love my 24-105. It replaced my 28-135 I used when I was still shooting film. The only thing that has me wanting the 24-70 is the extra stop for focusing in low light. The cameras will use the max aperture in the view finder and for focus and sometimes - for me - I can notice a little bit of a slow down when using f/4 instead of f/2.8 to focus.

Other than that I love the lens and probably will not part with it even after getting the 24-70.

You will be spending a lot more money than for just the two lenses if you hang out more here .

All eyes are on the Tamron SP 24-70 VC. The MTF chart looks impressive - almost matching the Canon 24-70L II's performance (assuming focussing is not an issue!) ... with vibration compensation:

I kept the 24-70, and still use it for certain things, but I use the 24-105 far more often. So, although for me the question went the other way around (should I keep the 24-70?), I think you'll be happy with the same answer - yes! - if it's not a hardship.

Have the 24-70 ordered so I sold the 24-105. Seemed like overkill to me especially with a 70 -200 in bag also.

I used to have the 24-105 and replaced it with the 24-70. I wished I didn't sold it, it's great for travel even for photo shoots. Very sharp.
