p.1 #1 · 5D Mark II and 7D or 1D IIn?

Well I made the leap to full frame and glad I did. I sold a lens and had sold my IIn also. While checking out my IIn I discovered the auto focus was no longer working. I refunded the buyer's money and apologized. I will send the IIn into Canon for repair. Now for the dilemna, do I:

1. Sell the 7D which was new last December and repair and keep the IIn
2. Repair IIn and sell it but keep the 7D

I love my IIn for sports and feel I get better performance out of it than I do the 7D. The 7D is obviously a much more versatile body and does video better than the 5D II at least thats my initial impression. After a weekend shooting the 5D II I can't imagine I will go back to using the 7D for day to day like I have been. I really want to keep a high fps body for my kids sports.

If I get rid of the 7D I will also need to sell 2 EF-S lenses also. But as a plus I would have enough left to pick up a 35L or 50L for the 5D II.

What would you do in this situation and why?

Indoor sports or outdoor?

How much do you need to crop for your sports shooting?

Good outdoor light for sports, little to no cropping, I'd go for 1D2n and some new FF glass.
Indoor light for sports, a bit of cropping, I'd try to get by with 7D

Mostly outdoor cross country, track, softball some indoor volleyball. I love my IIn with the 70-200 2.8 for my outdoor sports.

IMHO, the 7D seems to be the kicker. It has little use, other than reach [which can be hugely helpful at times].

I shoot with a 1DIIn and love it. I like the file size. 21mp, 18mp, ect, it simply unnecessarily large for sports shooting most of the time. Even with the D3s available, I purchased a 1DIV instead. I love it, but processing hundreds of full res files makes an impact on computer resources. You can definitely tell a difference in LR and download times. File size is the reason I still shoot with the D2Hs as well.

another factor is the body. The big problem with having a 1D series camera is that it is difficult to replace it with a smaller body. You get used to the size and ruggedness. The 1D series is not simply about pic quality, albeit, I think the files are great looking. It is about a body that can take abuse and continue to get the shot.

I'd keep the IIn.

There's my 2 cents.

same battery setup between 5DII & 7D would keep things a bit simpler.

If 5d III is an option, you should look into it. You get best of both worlds in 1 body.

You may want to call Canon fairly quickly as far as the 1D2n. I called last week and was told the 1DMk2 had reached its end of service life and Canon wouyld no longer service it.
Thats the straight 1DMk2 , not sure about the 2n.
.
I think I'll post this as well since I think it will affect a lot of owners.

I like the older 1D-series bodies very much.

I love the 5D2 imaging.

I've never been keen on the 7D (or owned one).

With what you have, I'd say, keep the 5D2 and 1D2n.

The next step up the ladder, you'd be a candidate for the 5D3 and 1D3.

I would keep the 1D Mark IIn. It is a solid workhorse camera. It remains my primary camera for sports and marching band/winter guard both indoors and out. (I still use an original 1D too.)

I have a T2i for personal fun but did just spring for a 5D Mark III for more work but plan to keep the Mark IIn (and 1D). Heck, I see an almost minty Mark IIn at Adorama for about $1K and may pull the trigger for it too.

Thanks all, I had pretty much made up my mind already this was just a sanity check. I love the 7D but I love the IIn also. IIn going off for repairs 7D just posted for sale. Can't justify (2) $1K+ bodies anyway.
