p.1 #1 · used auto ISO on my 5D3 last night,very impressed!

I shot some pictures at a jazz club in NYC last night and I decided to give the auto ISO a try.Now that you can set a minimum shutter speed it seemed to me to worth experimenting with so I brought my 85L along and set the camera to 1.2 with a minimum shutter speed of 125...I was able to shoot the show without the distraction of constantly adjusting the ISO given my confidence in the minimum shutter speed and the results were outstanding,I am impressed and will be making use of this function more in the future!

Maybe you could clear something up for me. I've seen people complain about the implementation of auto iso on the Canon cameras.

Up until the Mk4 I didn't ever play with it. However, I've been messing around with it a lot lately. I've been shooting promotions where the promoter's team of people doesn't even bother to aim the lights well. There will be hot spots that are 16X brighter than the rest of the area.

To compensate for this, I've been putting the camera in Tv mode, setting my desired shutter speed, putting the ISO to A and letting the camera have at it. For the most part, my exposures are where they need to be and represent a true scene.

The only thing I've noticed is, rather than keep my aperture at 2.8, sometimes it'll go to 3.2/3.5 rather than dropping the ISO down. Not a problem seeing as how clean the ISO is on the cameras even in the 1000's, but still, why not get a cleaner file.

The auto setting is not perfect for sure,If you want a certain setting exactly you have to do it yourself but in a setting like I was in last night where the lighting changes constantly the auto setting worked quite well for me....is it perfect? No!But it is dramatically better now that you can set a minimum shutter speed.....I will be using it in the future!

I am just trying to get clarification on what people are complaing about in it. I'm not saying there's not an issue to them, I'm just curious what that issue is.

I'm happy with Canon's auto ISO too. Its actually usable now. While still a bit behind Nikon's, at least now we can set a minimum shutter speed as opposed to a default setting.

Glad to see this post... it deserves a try for me.

Yesterday I took pics with iso fixed on the 5D3 and didn't pay attention to the light as I followed someone outside..... Needless to say, the first few pics were totally blown out because it was much brighter light... That's when I first thought I am going to look into that auto iso....

prior to being able to set a minimum shutter speed the auto ISO was useless to me because the camera was setting shutter speed to the focal length of the lens by default and when I needed higher shutter speeds I was unable to rely on the auto setting.....now,I can set a floor for the shutter speed and rest easy that the camera will not ruin a shot with an improper shutter speed for the event....not perfect but a big improvement and very usable!

The two primary complaints I've seen about Auto ISO in the 5D3 are: 1) the fastest shutter speed you can set as a minimum is 1/125 (for those shooting action, it would be nice to set a faster minimum speed); and 2) can't use exposure compensation when using Auto ISO in manual mode.

you can now set the minimum shutter speed to 1/250 which is not high enough for sports shooting to be sure but works well for indoor activities!

Because on the 5 series they still offer no EC when using AutoISO in M mode and while they did finally add shutter speed minimum setting to AutoISO Av mode, where EC does work, which may have largely gotten around the lack of EC in M mode, Canon marketing, ALONE AMONG ALL CAMERA MAKERS, was so ridiculously internal market segmentation petty that they cripped it on the 5 series making the maximum allowed minimum shutter speed only 1/250th, utterly useless for almost all sports and wildlife, so ridiculous. That means it will be 5D4, at least, until marketing finally lets them dribble out a working version (and yet marketing has no issue bumping price up $800). Seriously not one person will buy a $7000 1DX because of this, all they do is annoy their customers and make themselves look cheap and petty and erode customer loyalty (and over such a minor little thing too). I fail to see what they gain.

The shame of it is that exposure compensation with Auto ISO in M mode could be so easily implemented with just a firmware update for a range of cameras - no hardware changes are needed.

I use M + auto ISO quite a bit on my Nikons, and often with exposure compensation. I set shutter speed to control motion blur (as in shutter priority mode), aperture to control DOF (as in aperture priority mode) and let the camera change the ISO (so I still have auto exposure). As with all automatic metering modes there are situations where the metering needs a helping hand via exposure compensation.

If you go back several years the noise at middle and higher ISO made auto ISO a poor choice for those wanting good image quality but modern cameras can do a pretty good job and make auto ISO viable.

What? The fastest minimum shutter speed allowed is 1/250s on the 5DmkIII? Oh my, it looks like I'll end up keeping my 1DmkIV after all.

There are two complaints about Auto-ISO on the 1D4 that I've seen:

1) No EC in M + Auto-ISO mode. Relatively simple work-around for this one: Av + Auto-ISO + custom function to set min shutter speed. That does give you EC. Same thing works in Tv.

2) Much more limited control if you are using flash. I haven't paid much attention to this one personally, so don't recall the details.

The bulk of the complaints you see are from folks that don't use a 1D4. The auto-iso on other Canon models was pretty useless.

Like you, I find it pretty useful on the 1D4. I haven't noticed the sort of behavior you mentioned, but I always use it in conjunction with Av rather than Tv.
