p.1 #2 · Newest Sandisk Ultra card in original 1D?
I cant say for sure, but my thinking would be if it errored in the nikon it may not work in the canon either.
the specs for the 1D are very basic.
upto 2gb non UDMA .
but then as the 1D is very slow to write any faster cards are wasted anyway.
as for the 4gb . (again I doubt the newer ultra will work)
these are not supported in the 1D . but there is a get around.
you need to fully search the actual method as I cant remember (its been a long time) .
But basicly you need to format the card on a PC at a different cluster size.
you MUST NOT format the card in camera . if you do you will be stuck with a 2gb card. I did it once and getting the 4gb back was possible but I involved some softwre I had to download. a real pain.

In a Windows OS you can format FAT(16) from Disk Management and set the cluster size to 64K. It is only a few clicks. Back in the old days I wrote this simple DOS batch file for 4GB cards and placed it on the desktop.
@echo off
set /p targletter=Enter drive letter of flash memory card:
echo y|format %targletter%: /fs:fat /x

Can anyone confirm that the new "Ultra" card is not FAT 16?
I bought it right before a wedding as a backup card for my other cards, but it didn't work, so I returned it to B&H. Looking back, it may be that Sandisk switched to FAT32 at some point.

If the card does not work in one camera perhaps it is defective. Did you try it in other bodies?
EBH
I did not try it on another body; I guess I was afraid of damaging the camera.

If you use this format trick, can you still then format the card in the camera after?

no its you that formats the card. you can format the card how you want on the computer.
But newer cards maybe of a spec that the the old 1D was not built to

No. like i said if you format a tricked 4gig card in camera you will formt it to 2gig . As I said I did it a couple of times and had to run it thru a program that reset the card . sort of like a low level format .
By the way I think the 4gig card I used was the old Sandisk Ultra II . not sure what speed it was though.
to be honest for all the hassel I would just pick up a few cheap old 2 gig cards and use those. if you want new ones try lowspec cards from a place like amazon that you can return the things if they dont work.

I'm concerned about counterfeit cards. You know, the ones that look like CF cards, but are just a shell with a junk micro SD card inside.
I used to buy all my sandisk and lexar cards only from B&H. But they no longer have 2GB cards, which recently went out of production.
If I buy from a questionable source, and then email Sandisk to verify that the cards are legit, and they end up being counterfeits, then what? I've heard it's hard to return cards to Amazon vendors.
I'll take a chance and buy some of those 2GB Sandisk Ultras...if anyone with a 1D can verify they actually work, that is.

Seriously, counterfeit 2gig cards? That's like a forger going to all the trouble to set up forged bank notes and making dollar bills instead of 50's or 100's
The things are so cheap
I'm sure if you ask around there will be a few with old small cards they don't use anymore.

Ok, well, the risk might not be too high to get a counterfeit. but I still need to figure out if the Ultras actually work in the 1D. They appeared not to work in a Nikon D1x and gave an error, but I'm not sure if that was b/c they are FAT32(?), or b/c the particular card I got was defective. This was almost 2 years ago.
