I have a canon XTi and a 18-55mm standard lens and a 85mm f1.8. We are taking a trip to Colorado Springs in May and I want to buy a better lens. I think from research the two lenses I want to purchase are the 17-40mm Canon lens and the 70-200mm non IS F4 lens.
I am in the future going to buy a 7D camera.
Any suggestions on which Lens to purchase first? Never been to Colorado springs, so just curious of suggestions people have. Thanks

A little bit of everything. I like landscape, but also know that a zoom would be nice, just never been to colorado springs so i am not sure which lens would be a better choice. I really wish I had both lenses.

I personally have both the 17-40 and the 70-200, having just upgraded from the kit lens late last year. I must admit, for an all purpose lens, I find myself using the 17-40 a ton more. The 70-200 is sometimes a bit imposing and with a crop sensor can be a bit tight for my uses. When I have enough space to take candids from a distance, it's amazing, but like I said before, for general use I tend to stick with the 17-40.
That being said, I was in your position a while ago and I went with the 70-200 first. It's cheaper and it covers a focal length that your kit lens doesn't. But when I did that, there would be many occasions in which my kit lens was stuck to the body and my nice new lens was in my bag. (Not always the best feeling).

For landscape your 18-55 probably isn't going to be that bad. I'd get the 70-200/4 which will work well in the Garden of the Gods, and from on top of Pikes Peak. The 18-55 will wok well in Old Colorado as well, A nice place to visit.
