Looking at aftermarket batteries for a 7D I just purchased and notice that some aftermarket batteries say the following. :This battery is fully functional to power up the camera. Due to decoding technology,Camera might not recognize this battery as an OEM battery and might not display battery information,It is only compatible with the non OEM battery charger.
Anyone find any aftermarket batteries that will work?
My Sterlingtrek batteries have the magical ROM chip and so both my 5D2 and 7D show it in the battery info menu. The last time I checked battery info was when the battery was new and I wondered if it had the chip or not. Not very useful info info in the grand scheme of things. However it charges fine in my Canon charger so I guess that's a good thang.

Jim, what you have is a dum non chipped battery. The canon charger WON'T charge it, and the camera won't give any info from it.
There are plenty of smart chipped 3rd party options around. I won't go into the options and the pros and cons of using 3rd party ones here but if you search out threads on things like LP-e6 etc you will get plenty of reading.
I bought some extra DigiPower batteries, from Future Shop here in Canada, less than half the price of the Canon LPE6s. Camera shows all info for them, charger charges them the same, blinking, and they work fine. They are rated less so may not last as long, never really tested how many shots, but one has lasted me a day shooting a 16gb card of raws and previewing/deleting for sure. Hope this helps.
