So this shot was interesting because I couldn't get the white parts in focus. I think maybe they were a bit blown-out on the viewfinder (Nex-7, pretty high contrast EVF), and so I never saw a sharp edge. Which bummed me out as this would've been a fairly nice pic if i'd gotten them in focus. With the CV 35/1.2 and a 0.9 ND filter.

I have aquired an "as is" Rokkor 58 1.2 (early version 250XXXX serial number) that has some scoring around the edge of the rear lens.

Looking at the this thread, I see images taken with other examples of this lens are quite sharp at f1.2 compared to this example of the lens I have.

I respectfully ask this community for advice about my lens. Should I investigate having a professional repair/polish the rear lens? Is the damage un-repairable?

Any advice gratefully accepted.

is that a 100% crop or the full image?

the fact that i have to ask is a very bad sign if it's the full image.

The bananas are full image. The close up of the lens is a 100 crop. I suspect that the blemish around the edge is really softening the images when at f1.2. Is it even possible that a professional polish might improve things or is this lens irreparable?

I think you are pretty-much out of luck.

To be honest, it seems to me like there is more wrong with the lens than just the scratches. It seems to me like it was disassembled and then re-assembled incorrectly or something.

Reminds me of the Zuiko 55mm f1.2 I used to have @f1.2
It really is a very nice effect.

The little scratches on the rear element almost certainly don't affect the sharpness. They might reduce the contrast and they may be visible in out-of-focus highlights but that's about it.
I would think it is more likely caused by someone disassembling the lens and putting it back together with an element the wrong way round or two elements interchanged. If that's the case you might be able to repair it - with some patience.
I might also add that I have the impression your shot is not focused on any part of the bananas, some of the wood grain of the table top a few cms in front of the bananas appears to be sharper.

I just noticed this, too. Focus is definitely not "bang on" here.

David, it looks like it could be threads of fungus instead of scratches. Have it cleaned by a professional or you could take out the rear lens yourself and try to clean it.

It was hard to focus b/c it is like looking through fog on the NEX-7 EVF. I am also not exactly well seasoned with manual focus.

Thanks for the assessment OpticalFlow. It didn't occur to me that something other than the scoring on the rear lens would cause the softness. I will have to think about my options.
