p.1 #1 · Canon 7D Lens Mount "Gives" with 70-200 Lens

I love my Canon 7D and love the results from my new 70-200 IS 2.8 L II even more. However, I've noticed a small amount of "give" in the mount with the lens attached. I.e., the lens moves a little. This seems to be due to the weight of the lens, as I've discovered it happening to some degree with my MP-E 65mm as well. I had not noticed this previously with my 24-70mm 2.8 L (a heavy-ish lens) or others.

Something to be concerned about? Something that can be fixed? Is it possibly the lens

Thanks.

Rotational "give" or waggle give?

There's a little play on my 70-200 2.8 when it's attached to my camera bodies. I'd say a tiny bit is normal.

Lenses usually wiggle rotationally but should be well fixed in any other direction

Yes, I'd say it is a rotational wiggle or "play."
Thanks for the replies.

Same for me with 100-400, and 300 F2.8. I think it's pretty normal for a little "play".

It is hard to say for sure whether what you notice is normal or not, but I've found that many lenses will have a bit of "give," often of a rotational nature - and it doesn't seem to be a problem.

totally normal, if it rocked back and forth that would be bad though

I have the same "issue." I actually went into a local camera store to have them check for me, and they said it was "normal." Not sure if I trust that opinion, because the fellow said that what we were feeling was the movement of the IS mechanism, which I know it is not.

I get the standard rotational movement from the locking pin tolerances. But also a slight amount of wiggle-wobble movement. After getting the 70-200 and feeling this, usually when dangling the lens down off the body, I checked my 100L macro, and it, too, has that slight wobble.

We checked another 7D at the store with a 100-400L mounted on it also had a little of the same non-rotational wobble.

So is the consensus that I should not be feeling this? Should this be sent into Canon under warranty (both the body and lens were purchased within the last four months)?

Every instance of rotational play I have heard of has been sited as normal. I've had two 100-400Ls with each having exactly the same rotational play, and other lenses with a little bit to none. Think you can forget about it, even if it seems a little strange.

same here, a very small amount wiggle room is normal

If it is rotational IE you can move it by acting like you would twist it off a little to the right or left, then yes, it's okay.

The lens mount should be on the same plane as the lens mount on the camera. If those "lines" were to intersect, I'd say you've got a problem.

I definitely have a tiny bit of movement that is not rotational, but what John called wobble. Only really happens when the lens points down...at least that is when I can feel the slight give.

Thoughts? Send the rig in for a checkup?

Happens on my 1D3 and 1DsII as well. It's worse obviously with an extender or tubes mounted between them. Pretty normal and not detrimental.

A lot of my lenses seem to have a tiny amount of play, but my 70-200 II on my 7D did not exhibit this at all after a full day shooting the other day.

I also see the same thing as Will, it's quite normal.

Brand new 7D and 70-200 2.8 L II.......same thing. Of all my lenses this combo has the most "rotational play" . There are tolerances in machining any metal part but it just bugs me that it's on my most expensive lens.

Wait until winter and it will tighten up a bit.
