p.1 #1 · Question on whether Tamron or Sigma 17-50 lens will work on 1D

I am looking for a decent WA lens for my 1D MKIV for vacations
I bought the Tamron 17-50 VC (new) model and it Vignetted on MKIV but I heard that the non VC version was ok? Someone told me the Sigma 17-50 OS version would work on the camera but I cannot find any info on that either?
Am I left with only the Canon 17-40 or the more $$ Canon 16-35 MKI version?

Thanks!

Ben

The difference is whether or not the lens is designed for FF or crop. I had the original Tamron 17-50/2.8 for a crop body (liked it a lot), but when I moved to 1D II and 5D, I had to go with the 17-35 Tamron, since the 17-50 is for a crop body. I'm not aware of any lens that covers the 17-50 range for a FF image circle.

Check the designator (i.e. dc vs. dg) for sigma and I think you'll find it to be a dc in their 17-50 ... iirc.

Ben, let me first say I don't know for sure if any of the crop 17/18-50's work on the 1.3 crop format. But if you take the full of thumb that a crop lens would(if it did at all) work at its next formt up widest equivelant (which would be around 23mm I this case) I'm not sure it would be worth finding out , given that you have a 28-70L .
I do know that the 17-55 is no good at any focal length , but for real cheaps the 18-55IS does when the back spacer is removed (search 'dog toy hack')
You do have a couple of FF options from canon if you don't want to go the 16-35 or 17-40 route.
The older 17-35/2.8 would be a good bet (edge performance won't be such a factor) or the much older 20-35/2.8 .
Obviously there are a few 3rd party options in the 17- something range but you need to ask that question of someone else.

You can also go the much wider route to back up your 28-70 . There are a couple that do work.
Canons 10-22 from about 12-3mm with a minor bit of surgery on the spacer ring. And Tokina's 12-24/4 which is fine from about 14mm .
I have the Tokina and it works great on my mk2n (not that I use it much).

If I was looking to buy just for the 1.3 crop I would just go for the ff UWA that fitted the budget

How much are you willing to spend ?

Get the Sigma 12-24 if its within your budget (its quite close in price to the Canon 17-40). Its Ultra-Wide for FF and WIDE at ~16mm for a 1.3x crop.

Or, the Tokina 12-24 f/4.0 with certain limitations as this article explains:
