I'm concerned about the edges on FF with this lens. Tamron seems to make decent lenses for crop bodies, but FF edge sharpness has not impressed me.
My old Tamron 28-75 was decent in the corners on FF and I was under the impression that neither comparable L in this range (24-70L, 24-105L) were especially strong in this area. The Tamron was noticeably better than my 24-105L when I tested them both @ 28mm.
Based on some of Tamron's other recent lenses, I think it has the potential an excellent lens. My only reservation is the build quality compared to a Canon L lens, and their ability to withstand rough usage.

I was actually surprised to find that the tamron 70-300 VC actually did better at the edges than at the center compared to the L's. Wide open edge performance was never as good in the center across the entire range but was sometimes close or the same near the edge!
And my tamron 28-75 while not amazing at FF edges at 28mm is better than the two 24-105L I tried there.
Tammy 28-75 has a lot less barrel distortion than 24-105L and is probably better in the corners.
I have high hopes for the 24-70 VC, so let's see some real reviews ASAP.

I had the exact same lens which was unacceptably soft on the entire left edge of a full frame. So if anything, QC wasn't exactly up to snuff.
Interesting, especially since the MSRP is usually about 30% (or more) higher than the initial retail prices (remember Tokina 16-28/2.8 that had MSRP of $1400 but debuted at $850 on B&H?) I might adopt this lens if I continue to do theatre work where the 70-200 is too narrow at times for general shots and my 24-85 doesn't really cut it (f/4.5, no IS, only fair sharpness wide open...)
have been waiting on this lens price to come out with hopes it be sub $1000 (or about $1000) but i guess that is not going to happen. i will have to wait to see some reviews before buying this i think.

I just sent back 2 copies of the 24-70 because I was unhappy with the performance on the edges (both were decentered with very soft edges on the left side). I exasperation I ordered a mint copy of ht e 28-70, which has wonderful reviews. That copy also was terrible.
I am more than willing to try what Tamron has to offer, it could hardly be worse than my experience with Canon so far. I am beginning to really regret the sale of my D700.
IS is good, but in this range, honestly, for me would be just a bonus, and not the main deciding factor. I had the tamron 28-75, and then bought a 28-70L. More than anything else, the autofocus of tamron was slow and had a hard time locking in low light. Huge improvement with the L. the tamron was fantastic when i was shooting it on a crop, and infact, I think it makes a phenomenol portrait lens on a crop with fov of 45-120mm, but on full frame, it has soft corners, esp on wide end
The 28-70L I just had could not compete @ f8 with a 50 f/1.8 in the center @ 1.8! I am really P#$sed. Never had this kind of problem with Nikon. I'm trying to tell myself it's bad luck but 3 copies no good? I've got a Heritage Camp to shoot in June and I have nothing shorter than 50mm in Canon. I may have to pick up another D700 + lens just so that I know I have something that will work.
