Hey guys, i recently bought a nikon d700 and i am having trouble with the usb connectivity. I plugged in the usb cable into both my macbook and my windows xp laptop with no response from both the computer or the camera. They both have the nikon software installed. I did some research online and a lot of people seem to have problems connecting but eventually got it working. When i had my old d5100 and plugged it in, there would be something that would pop up on the computer that would let me browse that camera as a drive but like i said, when i plug the usb cable into my computer nothing happens on the computer or camera. can anyone help me with this dilemma? Thanks in advance.
I, and many others, would NEVER connect the camera direct to the pc unless shooting tethered. Get yourself a card reader and get faster read speeds, as well as making sure your camera never gets fried by a bad usb port (it's happened to me with my D80).

This is a used d700. I have a cf card ordered already but i would like to make sure everything here works
I do believe there are a couple settings in one of the menus regarding USB, whatever you have it set to change it to the other setting and you should be good to go. I loaned my camera to a buddy or i would tell you the exact setting but check it out
I changed cables and still nothing, yes i have the power on and it is a usb 2.0. The reason i think the usb may be bad is because nothing happens on the camera or the computer when i plug in the cable.
If you're connecting directly to the computer's >>back ports<<, not a hub or the front ports, and it's still not working, then I would say send it to either Nikon or APS for repair.
IIRC, the D700 doesn't have a mass storage mode on USB. It'll shoot tethered via USB, but I think there are issues trying to read directly from the camera's card over USB. CF card readers are much faster at transferring files than connecting cameras directly anyway, especially if you buy an eSATA reader.
Turn the camera on before you connect the cable. USB gets finicky about this. I plugged my D700 in and the computer recognized it immediately. This on Windows 7. I don't see why anyone would use the USB connection. Just a few megs of files were a "wander off to the kitchen and get a sandwich" operation.
USB was designed to be "hot swappable" from the get go.
