Before I joined CPS Canada, I would really not like to hear this. About half of the new Canon gear I bought was priced sufficiently lower in the US (often at your place) to make an international purchase well worth the slightly greater effort.
As a member of CPS Canada, it's currently not a problem, as the CPS Canada price is invariably below the best prices in the US (after yadda, yadda...). OTOH, if the CPS Canada price discount disappears, then we could all be in a pickle. As it is, most of us might be in a pickle.

I was told a while ago by KEH Camera (Atlanta, Georgia) that they had some sorta Canon agreement in place which prohibited sales of new Canon gear to customers outside of US.
Used gear, no problem.

It has to do with trade between 1. Japan and US and 2. Japan and Canada. Canon makes the rules. If a retailer does not play nice, Canon can retaliate and selectively decrease retailer's margins. Canon stuff sells and retailers are interested to be in Canon's good grace.
I know I am just wild guessing, but this kind of business is not unheard of.
By the way, don't you think Canon Canada's profits are hit when canadians buy from US? Blame Canada... err, Canon Canada

Jim, I know what you are saying, but not all gears are covered by the CPS discount program.

Peter, that's right, but I think the biggest effect will be felt by the average Bob (which is Canuck for the US "average Joe'). When I said:

I was referring to the effects on non-CPS members (i.e. most Canuck FM'ers) , if the no-shipping-from-the-US happens. That would not be good. Given that Canon Canada is owned by Canon US, it doesn't seem to make much sense, either. Must be politics...

How long before this means US can't ship Canon gear any where else in the world either?
So now that people have long woken up to the fact they are being ripped off and use the internet to get some price justice, Canon take the Chinese approach of clamping down on such practices and try to maintain their price discrimination with no recourse for the consumer.

I was told that about 10 years ago by KEH they couldn't ship new toCanada and all I wanted was an extension tube.
It currently could be agreement by retailer. In the end if Canon stops all intercountry sales everyone loses. Yes Canon will be able to charge more, achieve higher profits but they will sell less as customers won't be buying as many gears, the retailers in particular the US will lose the international sales and will not be able to make up the lost sales domestically. Canadian/European sellers may gain sales but I think buyers will look more to the second hand market than buying new or just cut back buying to the same levels we have.
