I have a D3100 (purschased new 11/2010) and 2 days ago received an error message stating "Press shutter release button again." I have reset all settings, replaced batteries, changed lenses without any luck. I called local camera shops and gave be a estimates from $175-200 for repair. Looking online it seems that the shutter gear mechanism is stuck. I tried to remove the bottom plate of the camera, however this is difficult to do and unable to access the gear wheel...I searched online with guides for the D40, however nothing on the D3100. It seems that the screw placements are different on the D3100 vs the D40. Does anyone have any other solutions? Or do you think I should get this repaired or purchase a D5100 or D7000? Thanks.
Wow, I completely forgot that AMEX extends warranty 1 year after manufacturer warranty. I called AMEX and they just need the receipt w/ written estimate for the repair and then they will credit my AMEX account. Nice! Thank you.
I was excited to look for another camera though...I really like the D7000. But oh well, maybe next time.

Did you buy this with a credit card? If so, check and see if it offers an extended warranty.
If this was there probably lost it with opening the camera.
There is a boundary though, if repairs cost too much, that they'll replace rather than repair. I did this with a co-worker's laptop once, seems a screw had loosened up enough that when she moved the laptop, it fried the motherboard, just a few weeks outside the warranty.
