Hi guys!I need your expertice here I wanted to upgrade my lens instead of getting new body (d800).I think its overkill for what I shoot (mainly my 2 daughters) I use d700 35mmf2 af-d and 80-200 af-d anywhere we go.Now I have saved money that I can use for upgrade on one of these lens having hard time which one to upgrade
I love these two lens I use them equally. Read a lot of reviews about 35G and 70-200vr2 and I want them both
Unfortunately I can only upgrade one lens and I want your advice about this so which one? Thanks =robert=

depends how bad you want faster AF and VR- the 70-200 is great in it's own right, but personally i think the AF ED is plenty a match overall IQ wise- (many think the AF-S 80-200 is sharper than the 70-200 BTW)- but back on track i'd go to the 35G first as it's in a different leauge compared to the 35/2 AF-D. you did say your primarily shooting your daughters- so you might not want to go MF- but personally, the rendering of my zeiss 35/2, keeps me not lusting after the $1600 35G- i'd save $1000 bucks with that- and use that to upgrade your 80-200 to the AF-S 70-200 VR I. WIN/WIN/WIN.
If you love the two lenses that you already have, why not add something to the mix to fill the gap between them?
However, if you're sold on upgrading one of them, I'd go for the 70-200. As my daughter is getting older, it seems that I'm getting away from the close-range photos where the 35mm would shine, to photographing her at events or activities that require more reach.
I also have the 80-200mm af-d, which I like a lot, but could see the benefit vr in that range to make up for my reluctance to use higher iso on my D200. With a D700, maybe that isn't such an issue though.
Have you even considered the 24-70 this would give you some thing you don’t have. And if you want to go light weight take the 35 f2. The 24-70 is better at 35 than the 35 f2.
Thanks for the reply guys really appreciate it for got to mention I allready have 24-70 2.8 nikon which is superb but I don't use it that much when going outside.I will rent the 35G this weekend and see what this lens can bring.I tried my uncle's 70-200 vr2 and Im really impress about the performance.I did tried the 35G some local shop even tho slow to focus the 1.4 thing is killing me
really sharp for me and thinking if ill buy this lens I won't use this more than f4
Think think think..btw heres one of my daughter using 24-70 which i only use at home using multiple flash (my 3 sb28)
two thoughts: 24-70. A nice zoom range could really be a benefit to you, and you'd have the 35 as a pocket prime.
Also, the 85 1.8. Affordable, fast, and it seems you're comfortable with a 35 prime, so an 85 would just add a different look.
But, if I had to choose between a 35 1.4G and a 70-200 vr2? 35 G. You get the extra stop which can look really nice on FF. You get essentially the same DOF and FOV going from the 80-200 to a 70-200vr2. However, if you really need the VR and/or feel the 80-200 vignettes too much or AF is too slow, then I can see a case for it.
Still, I like the idea of upgrading my lenses to get a nicer DOF or unique FOV (which is why I somehow own something like four fisheyes).
