have a D90 and D300.i am needing just a little more reach on some pictures for sports.i have been reading about these but not sure what i need.my lens is a Sigma 70-200mm 1:2.8 EX DG OS HSM.the one i get will it work with both cameras?will it work with a sigma 17x50?
For the Sigma 70-200 you should be looking at the sigma 1.4x tc. When selecting a teleconverter you need to be careful as not all lenses will work with the various tc's that are out there. If you go to sigma's website they should have a compatibility chart that will show if your other lenses will fit.

The Sigma 1.4X will work with both cameras on your 70-200. Expect even more of an AF slowdown
with the D90. Forget about trying to use the TC with the wide zoom, you're better off cropping.
What about the sigma 2x teleconverter? I am looking to get the same lens, or its predecessor, and the sigma 2x for getting 400mm F5.6. Of course it wont be quite as sharp as the 1.4, but should produce much better results than cropping right?
^ Uh, no. AF will be horrible. You'll have to stop down to f8 >11 and even then the IQ will be marginal at best.
The only TRULY worthy zoom combo to get 400 f5.6 would be the Nikon 70-200 f2.8 VR II and the TC-20E III.
Even so, keepers will be predicated on long lens technique and a body with at least the Cam 2000/3500 AF module.
Another option you should look at is the Nikon 70-300 VR. It runs around $400 used and has very good IQ. The drawback with it though is you can't shoot without decent light.
Will, do you still use a BushHawk? What's your impression of it? I find myself shooting BIF hand held most of the time as a tripod and gimbal feels clumsy and slow. Is the BushHawk a significant improvement over hand held?
Graeme, I do. 200 f2/300 f2.8 VR's w/wo TC's, 200-400 f4 VR but that's kinda tricky if you use the zoom much.
Same with the 70-200 VR II and the TC-20E III...left at 400 it really helps, but ya almost need a third hand to zoom.
I did try it with a 500 but the one I borrowed had a short AS plate and I couldn't get as good a balance as I like.
Thanks Will, might have to give one a try. I figured having the camera attached at the shoulder and by both hands should make for less 'shake' and easier tracking than just hand holding 10+ pounds of camera and lens.
Search for some old threads by thehotel (Wacky Roger) He's got quite the set-up w/beamer etc.,
THE guru around here. I've got a huge upper body (all that tree swingin') and just need the grip
with left elbow tucked for a natural triangle. Lots of guys love the shoulder stock, many hate it.
Probably best if you can try before buyin'...it's not for everyone.
got the Sigma 1.4X today and just the few mins with it i think its going to do what i want.was going to shoot softball today but had surgery yesterday and don't think it would be good.thank you all.
