p.1 #1 · At a crossroads.... 1Ds2 + 70-200 II or 5D3 + 24-105 f/4??
Here's my dilemma, I just sold about everything and am down to a few lenses and a 5D2... I need a second (or first) for backup or primary...
Now I have enough to get a new 5D3 kit with the 24-105 or I could spring for a used 1Ds2 and 70-200 f/2.8 ii for just about the same... I shoot primarily weddings and portraits...
I'm suddenly leaning toward the 1Ds2 and the 70-200, but there's that new AF system on the 5D3, not to mention the ISO performance.... hmmmmmmm..... And I've never used the 24-105 f/4 IS...
Open to other ideas, suggestions based on your experiences...

I'd go 5DIII + 24-105L, which happens to be a great lens.
I'd sell the Sigmas and the Tokina and get the 70-200L II.
The batteries usually become an issue with the 1D and 1DIIs.

The 1DsII and 70-200 is a magical combo.
I still have the original batteries for my 1DsII, I treat them very well and discharge fully before every recharge. I have yet to get past half way on either of them on a full days shooting. They are about 5 years old.

24-105 and 70-200 are completely different ranges. I have no idea what you do, but on a limited budget I'd opt for better lenses compared to the bodies. I rarely use the 24-105 as it is one of the weaker lenses I've had (all three of them).

perhaps slightly off-topic.. but i'd like to throw this out there in case it sways you (either now or in the future): cost-permitting, i think every serious Canon shooter should own a 70-200mkII. it's THAT good.

easy decision for me. 1ds2 w 70-200 II
i always get great glass before bodies.
1Ds II is Magical &, from reviews, so is the 70-200 2.8 II.... Lenmar batteries can be picked up for aprox.. $40.00 (I have 4)... I never need a battery...

I couldn't agree with you more. It's as good as our L prime but it's a zoom. Your shots are only as good as the glass you use. There isn't better glass than the 70-200 f/2.8 L IS!

1DsMkII + 70-200 f/2.8 IS MkII is a great performing combo that is probably a godsend for wedding photographers and many others.
I am sure 5DMkIII has an AF system which is superior to that of 1DsMkII, but the older camera still AFs pretty good. However, I believe 70-200 f/2.8 IS MkII should make more impact in your shots than a better focusing prosumer camera such as 5DMkIII.

If you decide on the 1DsMkII, I have one for sale on Buy/Sell boards here. I'm selling that trying to save for the MkIV.
I ended up getting the best of both worlds. I sold my 7D, 1D Mark II and 5Dc and bought the 5D3 and am in love with it!
Then I traded my 5D2 straight up for a 1Ds2 with only 16k clicks on it. That should be arriving this week/early next week, if the camera's half as nice as the photos, I'll be in good shape.
The 5D3 reminds me of a full frame 7D, the shutter sound is nearly identical. 6 FPS in practice is more than fast enough for my kids running around and the AF system is everything we wished the 5D2 would have been....
