I did my first gig with my 4 day old D4 and experienced my first glitch!
I was shooting an awards presentation and suddenly the camera refused to fire....
I tried everything from turning the camera on and off, putting the camera in manual focus mode to try to fire the shutter, taking the battery out and putting it back in but no luck.
We had 4 cameras with us (3 shooters) but my backup D3s was with one of the other guys...
I had to run and retrieve it and it worked out in the end.
There is no such thing as a one-time-glitch with a new computer product.
I would shoot it exclusively for a week or two, then tell Nikon about the problem after you have eliminated new camera user error.
That is why we have backups.

I had the same thing happen to me on a couple occasions. I have 2 D4(s) and the first time I didn't notice which one it was. I shot a wedding yesterday and it happened twice in about 3 mins. It locks up and the green led is on which tells you it's accessing the cards. I was in matrix mode, AP, ISO 400, AF-C, I forget the other settings. I had to turn it off, take the battery out, reinsert and start shooting again. It didn't do it again the rest of the nigh which was about 4 hours of shooting.
I can't duplicate the problem either. I have brand new cards in there too XQD 32GB and Lexar 32GB 600x. It happened while shooting NEFs and again while shooting JPEGS.

Please keep us posted on this issue. Be interesting to see what happens as many more start shooting with the D4. If the storage access light was on, I wonder how you each have your card settings set? I could see issues when shooting mirrored as the cards are not the same format or speed so that could easily cause issues same as it would in any computing device. Of course I'm assuming the mirror option is still offered. Personally I'd rather they offered it in 2xXQD or 2xCF, not mixed formats.
I had both the 16gb XQD card and a 32gb Sandisk Extreme Pro 90mb/s card in their respective slots doing a mirror backup.
The cards write very fast and there was very little writing times after a series of shots.
It's a little worry some being such a new camera if it happens again at the wrong moment.
Come to think of it, the same thing happened while I was playing with a D4 prototype in Nikon's offices. That was passed off as a prototype glitch.
I assumed the delay in the shipping of the D4 in Feb was to make some firmware changes.
I bet you the freezing up at the beginning is the camera trying to "set-up" the cards and therefore seems like its freezing (it may very well be in the end), but more likely, it was calibrating or setting up the cards for future shooting. Kinda like formatting or something.
I've had a few cameras and also worked with lots in the studio. Every now and then, one of the cameras will lock up and freeze. And then never do it again. Go figure.
I was shooting a flyin last week, and my new D4 also locked up a couple of times.
No, not using the new xqd card- not formatting, etc.
Meter still worked- settings changed on the top lcd as I moved the camera around
Focus was locked
Shutter would not fire
Turn camera off and on- no change
Pull the battery for a second, shove it back in - and camera worked again like a dream.
Has done it 4 times so far- shot about 5000 frames last week.
seems to be a real issue
Will write nikon- still have 30 days to return, but would likely not see another one of these for a long time.

If what you guys are describing is what I am thinking, I've had this happen when I first got my D7000 a few days before launch and I remember a lot of threads about it.
Have you cleaned the lens contacts (not on the lens but in the camera) from maybe excess oil?
Either way it only did it maybe twice on that first day and 2 years later hasn't done it again!
I have this issue with my D3s sometimes. The problem is due to the compact flash card I was using. The camera seemed to try to write to the card, but would fail to do so.

I have had the same experience with both my D4 and D800. The workaround is to reboot, which really sucks to say the least. I use all new cards, CF and SD are Sandisk.
