Man, I love this thread And I am fully up for a trip to Iceland, one of the few places I still feel like travelling to.
Same. I went there before I really became interested in photography (actually this was at the beginning of the process, and a contributing factor for me to become more serious about it), and I would definetely enjoy a new trip, just for landscape photograph this time. Iceland is such a fantastic place to photograph.

I'm actually in the process of booking a lil holiday to Iceland in January, and will be looking to get the ZE 21mm before the trip! For the Icelanders...what are the chances of seeing the Aurora in a week long trip at the start of Jan?

I'd say it's about 50% getting the right weather and don't know the chances of the aurora activity, its different between years. Weather is often divided between the north/east vs. south/west so if it's cloudy on one side it might be clear on the other side of country.

That would be something, a serious alt landscaping trip. I'd expect the weather to be more comfortable later rather than early in the summer but Hauxon would of course know better. And we all know he knows some magnificent locations too :-)

At least from my side, it would probably not be realistic to come without family, so I could not do the usual zooming around, since my daughter is just 4. But certainly we could meet various pre-chosen locations, and maybe some evenings too.

Well, let's arrange a trip then, shall we? Maybe early next summer? Is the second member Kiddik?
Yes, he's the other member of LPI or Lens Perverts Iceland. haha
Iceland actually has a surprisingly large photo-community for only 320.000 inhabitants. The most popular Icelandic forum has over 12.000 members and is quite active.

Hrannar, what is that forum? Maybe I should visit it and start learning some Icelandic. Is it possible to buy an Icelandic-English or Icelandic-Danish dictionary, or is Icelandic not documented?

Well that goes for me too having sole custody of a 9-year old son. We could sit watch child telly in the evenings at the hotel :-)

A meet-up in Iceland sounds like a wonderful idea guys.
I'm actually getting married (2nd time - different person ) in N Ireland in January and honeymoon considerations were:
- Inner Hebrides (Islay to be included - whisky hmmmm)
- Iceland
however, having grown up in N Europe, I know how short and probably wet/cloudy the days can be in NW European winters.
hauxon (Hrannar) - if the aurora viewing is as high as a a 50% prob that might be a deciding factor...I'm not surprised you have a large photographic community because your scenery is so spectacular!
...anyway, long-winded intro to me saying that I'm not going to have any more holiday allocation for the rest of 2013 and $ will have been spent on a wedding, so I'll be there with you in spirit only (preferably one of the better single-malts).

I tested the idea on my girlfriend, and she pointed out that we have talked about both Canada (where my father and one sister, as well as a bunch of friends, live) and Scotland (where I was born, my name comes from, and where I also have family), so unless she should suddenly change her mind, 2014 seems like the first time I could go...
Maybe we should start an Iceland thread. Photos, equipment and trip discussions

It would be awesome to get some of you guys over here! And regarding 50% chances of auroras, I'm pretty sure that chances are 100% that you will have a satisfying trip :-) If not auroras, then definitely something else will inspire you. Also, it's good for us Icelanders to get foreign photobuddies on trips because we get to re-experience our own country with your eyes. Sometimes we take things for granted, unknowingly.
