For simplicity's sake I'll keep it down to SLR gear (no point and shoots).
Dec. 2005 - got a Nikon D70 from my paper; 18-50/3.5-5.6 and 28-300/3.5-6.3 Sigma lenses. Both were shite. Used until Mar. 2006.
Mar. 2006 - first own DSLR, KonicaMinolta Dynax 7D, with 18-70 kit lens.
Apr. 2006 - two lenses added: KM 28-75/2.8 and Minolta 70-210/4 aka Beercan.
Jun. 2006 - added Sigma 15-30/3.5-4.5 superwide.
Dec. 2006 - Beercan replaced with Sigma 70-200/2.8 EX non-DG.
Apr. 2007 - Sold all gear, got Canon 30D with 17-55/2.8 IS lens.
Jun. 2008 - sold 17-55 lens, got a Tokina 12-24/4 and Canon EF 70-200/4 L lenses.
Jun. 2008 - hated the 70-200/4 and sold it within 2 weeks; got 70-200/2.8 L IS instead (sole keeper until now).
Sep. 2008 - received Canon 50/1.8 II as a gift.
Nov. 2008 - sold Tokina 12-24/4; got Canon 17-35L instead.
Nov. 2009 - sold 30D, got 1D Mark II N instead.
Mar. 2010 - bought a Sigma 14/2.8 EX HSM lens.
Sep. 2010 - bought an EF 24-85/3.5-4.5 lens.
Oct. 2010 - sold 17-35L
Dec. 2010 - bought a 430EX flash.
Feb. 2011 - got 16-35L II.
So that's where I stand now (see profile).

My adventure started in the 50's and trying to retrace my steps would be about as difficult as trying to retrace all the clothing manufacturers I've worn in that same amount of time. UG! I see some nice long lists here but I'm not up to creating something like that. Actually I'm not sure I could even if I were so inclined.

Cool thread idea for you non-ancient folks tho!

1977 - Dad bought a pentax ME with 50/2 lens. Since 1998 only used by me.
2003 - bought the canon 300D
2004 - bought the canon 30 (analog)
2006 - bought the canon 30D, sold the 300D, kept the 30e
2008 - bought the leica M8, kept the eos 30D but sold all but two lenses
2011 - bought the pentax MX with several lenses
2012 - bought the leica M9P, sold the M8
2012 - bought the nex 5N so can use my first pentax 50/2 lens again.

Next step is a TS lens since I got asked for multiple assignments were I could use one. Don't know if thats gonna be on the new leica M with an adapter, or with the 5D2/ 6D. Somehow the 6D looks really appealing to me.

-1987 Bought my first camera, a Minolta X300 plus standard MD 50mm f/1.7
-1989 bought a Minolta MD 80mm f/2 portret lens to photograph the girls
-1999 bought a Minota R 250mm f/5.6 mirror lens and a Manfrotto 144B tripod to photograph the solar eclips in Europe; I never got the chance as it was raining that moment where I was in Metz.

These lenses where not used for a long time. In the meantime I shot with an old Voigtlander Vito IIA that I got from my grandfather.

Untill...

-2011 I decided to try digital and bought a NEX5 with kitzoom

and

Voigtlander 35 f/2.5 Color Skopar,
Minolta MD 35 f/2.8,
Minolta MC 58 f/1.2,
Minolta MD 50 f3.5 Macro,
Minolta MD 35-70 f/3.5 Macro zoom,
Zeiss ZM 50mm f/2.0 Planar,
Minolta MD 24 f/2.8,
Canon FD 300 f/4 L.

Never sold anything.

I also needed, besides a computer, software etc., an Epson R3000 printer.

-2012 My latest acquisition is a Gitzo GT2542Traveler tripod with Sunwayphoto FD-35 ballhead.

Started with Canon 500D and kit 18-50mm, then recognised Canon lens isn't enough, switched right after a month to Contax N 28-80mm, then 24-85mm then 70-200mm, all converted by myself, keep electronic AF and aperture.Then improved to FF 5D2 but realised that no thing much is considered improvement.Now 500D for travel, 5D2 for near home events.The real improvement was I discovered that old Sigma SD9 is a real life color catcher, specially for flowers and foliage.Another in lens line are Contax 645 80mm f/2 for portraiture on 5D2, that's considered perfect combo for moving subject like people or animals with a great bokeh.Contax 645 120mm Apo-Makro-Planar is another beast, it fistly went with 5D2 but got no thing much, then SD9: not great either, but it sparks when couples with SD1M, they match each other for everything, the results most of the time don't need pp at all , I want this combo for landscapes and will for portraiture, this combo may become one of the best ever made untill now in the planet.I have also Leica X1 for museum, exhibition, shows, wedding and treet wandering, with accetable results.As I found that I always spend more than hour a day to move from home to work and back on my car, so I will do a mount that I can shoot while driving with X1. And I want my life more and more is recorded by decent pictures.

Used Dad's camera when a teenager - Halina (?)

1978 First SLR bought - a Russian Zenit E with standard 50/55 lens. Bought 2nd hand for GBP20 and it was lost when my canvas knapsack camera bag later fell off my motorbike in summer '79.
Jul 1981 - Pentax ME Super and 50/1.7 - still have this and the meter still works, so I expect it would function.
1994 - Pentax Z1 with some kit zoom. Given to a nephew around 2003-4 when I was moving into digital properly
2002 - Pentax Optio - 3mp digital point and shoot. See 1.
Jan 2004 - 2nd hand EOS630 for use with a new 24-85 that arrived before the...
Canon EOS 10D - See 2. for one of my first pics taken on day of delivery
Dec 2007 - Canon G9
May 2008 - Canon EOS 40D - what an upgrade! This camera now happily used by my stepdaughter (as she will be in early Jan13)
Feb 2011 - Canon 1D MK III, bought 2nd hand from a colleague for A$2000. Excellent camera. Only sold it for...5D Mk III
Oct 2011 - Panasonic G3. Kept only for a few weeks and sold, but it started me on the alt lens path
Dec 2011 - Sony Nex5N - wonderful camera - my 'pocket-rocket' when I need to travel light or use in a glider cockpit.
2012 - lots of wonderful lenses bought for use with the Sony and Canon
eg Leica R 28/2.8, Zeiss T* 50/1.7...1.4, Leica R Macro-Elmarit 60/2.8, Contax G 90/2.8, Canon FD TS 35/2.8, FL 55/1.2. Contax N 24-85, 70-300
...also bought quite a few 35mm film cams (Canon T90, Leicaflex SL, Contax N1s, Contax 139 Quartz, EOS 3) and now shooting mostly digital, but also B&W film
Aug 2012 - Canon 5D Mk III - full-frame digital always was a goal...

Most interesting thread. The journey for me is having more MF and less AF lens. It started with several 620 billow and box film cameras - and some terrible Kodak 35 and 110 Instamatics. Not including the P&S digitals:

Lessons learned:
1 The hobby of trying out new gear is far more expensive than the hobby of photography.
2 Most trades are sidewise at best - something gained and something lost.
3 You will never get the best results from gear you haven't used enough to fully understand how to get the most from it.
4 If you switch gear too often you will waste a lot of money over time which in time you may regret.
5 New gear is fun to use so fun that it can get in the way of becoming a better photographer.

I was given a Zenit E and a 50mm lens around 1970 which I used for years and years through university and beyond until I started earning when I went out and bought a Pentax MX plus 28mm, 50mm and 70-210mm, a really lovely little camera.
When it was stolen a few years later I bought a Nikon FE2 ( wow - automatic!) which I still have together with a Tamron 90mm macro and Nikkor 24 mm f2.8
I can't actually remember my first digital but I remember it was 2 MP and fixed lens, then an Olympus E1 ( at that point, a ridiculously expensive punt) but it was unreliable and we never bonded, then a Canon A95, I loved this little gem and won a few golds at the camera club with it, in fact I bought another as a spare! Then a Canon superzoom, forget which model - it was noisy as hell - and then an EOS 30D plus 24-105L, Sigma 150 Macro and canon 400 f5.6. Soon after that a 40D ( brilliant camera). Next was a 1D2n then a 7D which I hated and sold six months after purchase to fund a secondhand 1Ds2 ( another brilliant camera). Oh yes, I bought a Ricoh GRD3 for my pocket and then more recently, a Canon G1X. Then, finally, a 5D3 and 21 mm Distagon. The 5D3 does everything can conceive of needing, and more...
Next? I really really really want a Leica M......

A tip from me - don't look at the M8/M9/M* thread. It will lead you perilously close to, or actually, seeking out an expensive extra tool. I am in the former category....for now.
