After reading jcowell's list my eyes started to glaze over, mind went blank, but I now understand were the basis for the lens $ database came from.

Some kind of SLR in 1962 (bought on a Navy ship during the Cuban Missile Crisis)-That was fun
Another one in 1969 Vietnam - This was not fun
Canon A2E
Elan 2e
Sony NEX 5N

Sold most of my Nikon MF lenses to fund my Canon dSLR gear before I learned I could use them on a Canon body...have bought them back and a few more as well...luckily before the Nikon d200 and newer Nikon bodies made MF Nikkors fly through the roof price-wise...

At the age of 12, my grandfather (an outstanding photographer) gave me a Kodak Pony…loved it…stolen in 1965. Replaced with
Pentax Spotmatic with 50 and 135mm lenses (not sure what ones) then added
Yashicamat 124G (still have…loved it) then added
Nikon FE and Nikon lenses (super wide, tele, norm) can't remember more info
Nikon was stolen (longer story than that) so replaced with
Olympus OM1 (still have) then went digital with
Canon 20D (still have)
Canon 50D (still have)
Canon 5D2 (new love)

Canon 50mm f1.8
Canon 17-40 f4 L
Canon 24-105 f4 L IS
Canon 70-200 f4 L IS
Canon 70-300 f4-5.6 L IS

- Pentax P30-T + Pentax 28-80 + Vivitar 80-200? (a friend dropped this lens and bought me a Sigma 100-300 instead); sold everything to buy
- Canon Powershot G2 [2002]; sold to buy
- Canon EOS 300D [2004]; sold to buy
- Canon EOS 40D [2008]; sold to buy
- Canon EOS 5D [2009].

Had another 40D briefly in 2011 for a specific task, but resold it.

- Tamron 28-75/2.8 [bought with 300D];
- Tamron 90 Macro Di;
- Tokina 12-24/4;
- Sigma 100-300/4 EX. These four lenses were my kit for 300D.

- bought Canon 28-70/3.5-4.5 II as a temporary solution and sold Tamron 28-75/2.8 to gather funds to buy Canon 24-105L IS, then sold 28-70;
- traded Sigma 100-300/4 EX (too heavy) for a Canon 70-200/4L;
- bought Canon 400/5.6L (thought I wanted to do birds);
- bought a Canon 50/1.8 II, then sold it and bought a Canon 50/1.4, sold it also;
- had for a few months an EF-S 60 Macro and a Sigma 150 Macro;
- sold Canon 400/5.6L (very little use);
- sold Canon 70-200/4L in order to buy the IS version, which I later sold (not happy with IQ);
- bought a Tamron 180 Macro which was later traded for a Canon 70-300 IS.

At this point I moved to Full Frame.

- sold Tokina 12-24/4 and bought Sigma 12-24 (version 1);
- sold Tamron 90 Macro, bought Canon 100L Macro;
- sold Canon 70-300 IS, bought Canon 135L;
- sold Sigma 12-24, bought Carl Zeiss 21 ZE;
- sold Canon 135L (little use), bought another 70-200/4L;
- bought Samyang 35/1.4

Also had a TS-E 90, a Vivitar 28-200 and several adapted lenses (OM, C/Y and M42), all sold.

Currently I have 5D, Carl Zeiss 21 ZE, Canon 24-105L IS, Samyang 35/1.4, Canon 100L Macro, Canon 70-200/4L and an old Porst 50/1.2 that was converted to EOS mount which I seldom use. I somewhat regret selling 135L - didn't get much use but it delivered everytime -, TS-E 90 and also Sigma 12-24 (it was a good copy), but I'm pretty satisfied with my set right now. I may rebuy some of these lenses I regret selling, at some point, though.

p.2 #10 · p.2 #10 · your photography gear journey

My first camera was a Canon EOS 300 kit in 2001. I then bought and sold a dozen lenses for it. Let me think... 28-90, 80-200, 24/2.8, 28/2.8, 28/1.8, 50/1.8, 85/1.8, 135/2.8, Tamron 17-35 and 90 plus a few more. Then added a 30E body. My final kit was the 300, 30E, 28/1.8, 50/1.8 and Tamron 90.

Then in 2006 I jumped ship to Nikon and went digital with a D70s. If I remember correctly I've had for that the 18-70, 17-35, 35-70, 70-200VR, 20, 50/1.8, 50/1.4, 105/1.8, 105/2.5, 180, Tamron 90, Sigma 50-150 and maybe a few more unremarkable zooms. Eventually I settled into a kit comprising of a D2H (a superb camera), the D70s, 17-35AFS, 50/1.4 and 105/1.8.

Then in 2010 I bought a Bronica SQB. And after shooting with it for a couple of months I basically dumped all my digital stuff. I then bought a 50/1.8 for my Canon 300 (I kept it, my first camera) to restart with 35mm film. Added but then sold a 28/1.8, 24-105L, Tamron 28-75 and EOS 3.

I then replaced the Bronica with a Hasselblad 501. I briefly added a Bronica ETRS to try the 645 system but didn't like it.

So, my current kit is:
501CM, 50CT, 80CB, 150CF, 250CT
EOS 300, 1V, 20/2.8, 50/1.8, 100/2
and a recently acquired Olympus OM-1 with a 50/1.8 (brilliant little camera)

The plan is to eventually replace the 50/1.8 with a 50/1.4 II (when they make it) and to add a 553ELX/555ELD to my Hasselblad kit but that's about it. I don't feel the need for other focal lengths and I do have the best cameras money can buy in their categories so that's it, for the first time I'm really happy with the kit and don't feel adding to it. If I win the lottery I'll get a CFV50 back for the Hasselblad.

Of all the above, the only new gear I bought was the EOS 300 kit, D70s, Canon and Nikon 50/1.8 and Canon 100/2. Everything else was bought used and mostly sold at a 5-15% loss. The only exceptions are the Nikon 180 which I killed for about £180 (bought for £280 I think) but the 17-35AFS I had made a nice £300 profit. The 105/1.8 also made me £200. The advantage of buying FF lenses pre-D3 and selling post-D3!!! Crazy.

I shot through college with a Nikon 8008s and a 50/1.4 and a 80-200.

When I graduated, I used my gift money to buy a Canon XT with a 50 1.8 and a 18-55 non-IS.

I shot with that for a few years.

When, I learned my daughter was coming, I got a 50D + 17-50 Tamron and a Sigma 30 + 70-200 F4IS

I upgraded in about 8 months to a 5D classic with 24-70, Sigma 50, 70-200 F4IS and 100 Macro

A few years after that, I had in my possession a 5D2, ZE 21, 35, 100 and a Sigma 50

As of last week, I now have a NEX 5N with CV 15 + Contax G28, 45, 90.

I had lots of gear that didn't sit around for a long time, so I didn't bother mentioning it.

If you insist on the long and boring list:

Lots of attempts to capture reality. After using the kit of my parents, i bought a Ricoh 35 something, then, second hand, Leica IIIc to get the option of different angles of view, (50, 135), later the Visoflex II 65 &90mm, but at the time I was a (relatively) poor student.

In time, Pentax came along and I also discovered macro (the excellent 50/4). I used lots of Kodak Panatomic X, but switched to ilford FP3 + summicron collapsible so it would fit in a (large) pocket. later FP4 etc. plus eventually a CL.

Then, Alpa something,(9?) with the very goood Switar and the shorter and longer optics made for it. Angenieux and Kinoptic. Too big to carry around, so I tried Leica IIIG. I modified a Novoflex adapter to use the Nikon 21/4 on it. Later, I swapped the Leica for a Nikon SP.

For a long time I vacillated between SLRs and RF. I used OM1-4 in parallell with an old M3. OMs did not like rain and knocks, while the Leitz product did not mind that much. The 35/50 and 90 Summicrons were sharp and fairly contrasty as opposed to earlier efforts by other lens makers. I used Kodachrome & the Pradovit for realistic(?) results. Too lazy to develop B&W.( The Hyfin had to be mixed every time and fixer dies). Also Agfa at one point stopped making Portriga Rapid. Later I swithed from Kodak to Fuji films. At times I used Minox for portability and Linhof 6x9 for quality, but eventually stuck to 35mm. including their unreliable, but optically excellent 35mm ML models.

I decided to try digital imaging when 4 Mp was still a big sensor. Fuji first, then the Kodak DCS with a canon mount,- which reminds me that I finally succumbed to autofocus and Canon products back in the film era. The first, 620? did not like salt water, later ones had their shutters stop working. The Kodak had really good colours, but terrible low light performance..

In recent times I still have the M6 with its 50/2 that I used for many years, I use a Nikonos on the rare occasions when it is really wet and no one else take pictures, but it is the Olympus P1 and the Canon 5II which actually gets used.

The first is eminently pocketable and has an inbuilt stabilizer so that all my old optics can gain a virtual F stop or three from it. The Olympus' "kit" lenses 9-18,40-150 etc are quite good, and in low light I use the really excellent fast Schneiders (0,95-50 and 25). The Canon can use the unsurpassed Leitz R glass as well as the autofocus stuff. I use the 21-35, 50,60,100 and 180 on it besides Canons own glass. The 15fisheye gives pictures that my R optics do not.

I can't really do lenses, as there's no way I'd remember all of the 40+ lenses I've owned and sold over the years, so I'll just stick to cameras I used regularly:

1994: Samsung A77 point and shoot (film)
2001: Kodac DC3400 (what a brick - still have it, though, and it still works, though shot quality is significantly worse than my iPhone 4S).
2004 (July): Canon A75
2004 (Nov): Canon Digital Rebel (300D)
2006: Canon 30D (sold DRebel).
2008: Added Canon 10D
2009: Canon 1D Mark II, quickly replaced with Canon 1Ds Mark II (sold 10D)
2009: Olympus E-P1
2010: Panasonic G1, Panasonic GH2 (sold Canon 30D)
2011: Panasonic GH1 (sold G1)
2012: Added Panasonic GX1 (sold GH1 and E-P1)

Still need to sell my 1Ds II, though I haven't been able to get around to taking pictures and posting it for sale.
