#3: All images resized to 1920x1280 at base ISO
Quite a few people told others that beyond a certain size, the higher excess resolution doesn't matter. To validate this claim, please find enclosed 4 images resized from the respective original size to 1920x1280. No post processing whatsoever.
D3, ISO 200 D3S, ISO 200 D4, ISO 100 D800, ISO 100
I'd say, the D4 and D800 are the new benchmarks ....
In the first 4 images that are scaled to the size of the D3, you can see the extra detail of the D800 in the corrugated metal on the inside of the train tracks and on the light area of the track to the right of the red light - same with the D4 image but to a lesser extent.
The dinamic range of the D800 is truly amazing and can clearly be seen here.
I also noticed that the D800 noise (iso 6400 pic) is more "canon-like" (chroma noise).
The D4 seems to have this tendency as well, though not so noticeable.
One of the things I really appreciated about Nikon's noise was that it was film-like grain.

Nice test, but, I didn't see a D3s, at least not a pic id as a D3s--or am I going blind?
At the bottom of the post. The 4 photos with 1920x1280 each (D3, D3s, D4, D800).

Inadvertently, Andy, you've once again demonstrated that you own EVERY camera and lens that Nikon has every released... One might call this an abundance of riches...
Thanks for the comparison. The D800 appears to be a game changing camera. Once again Nikon has moved the bar higher...

Curtis,
to be precise. This is only true for Nikon D bodies. With lenses, I still have a long way to go ....

You are welcome. The D800 is indeed a game changing camera. No doubt about it.
Andy, I hope you remember the thread I started frustrated after the rumors about a 36MP camera as a D700 replacement... you was kindly explaining how things will work with the new camera...
I am a happy user of D800 now and this camera is blowing my brain every day...
Nikon is good to us!
BTW thanks for these comparison shots!... I already got some workable images at HI2 from D800... Its a beast!

Sure I do :-)
Hope my explanations then were correct ....
BTW, enjoy your new camera, I think it is a hell of a camera capable of so many things.
Thanks for your efforts here Andy. The detail, DR & cleanness of the shadow areas on the D800 ISO100 shot are pretty impressive. If the D400 can reproduce something similar I'll be very happy.
Andy
Hope it is alright to call you that.
All the time and effort you put into educating us, is so much appreciated.
I can’t thank you enough for all your posts.
I have had my D800 four days now, and I am just amazed by it.

I don't know why the hell I come here - every time i read a d800 thread I get a bit jealous and almost regret I switched brands (almost) I actually really like this shot, also, so it's cool to see something I would keep (with a few tweaks) as a test shot.
@Mark_L
All of the bodies use the factory default standard picture control. Looks like the contrast curve for the D3 tries to keep the midtones darker (due to more noise?).
@LXShooter
I do a lot of night photography, and most of the shots are great if a tripod is nearby. The resolution combined with teh dynamic range make it easy to work with.
