p.1 #1 · What's up with DPP 3.11.10 and 5D3 files?

For the folks who got their 5D3, what was the version of DPP software that came with the camera?

I noticed that I cannot replicate the sharp crisp output I get with 5D2 and DPP with 5D3 files. It seems that the new version of DPP is applying some noise reduction under the hood to the 5D3 files to make them look cleaner even when all NR is set to OFF. This is very bad news because it destroys my workflow but I want to make sure I am not missing something before contacting Canon. It came as a surprise.

Here is an example, note that NR was OFF and how detail has been smeared out in 5D3 output. The DPP version reads 3.11.10

Thanks

Look at page 90 of the DPP 3.11.10 instruction manual (it is available online at CanonUSA on the 5DIII page, yes they have the instruction manual but not the program available, go figure). It appears they are automatically applying NR when you choose high quality viewing but not with high speed viewing. Looks like this needs some experimentation to figure out a work flow.

Exif? 5d2 looks sharper.

The RAW files are very similar if you open them in ACR, the DPP output that is messed up.

Arash, you should also post this in the 'printing and post processing' forum.

Someone mentioned over the DPreview:

I have just posted some findings about ISO comparisons in a thread on Photo.net: http://photo.net/canon-eos-digital-camera-forum/00aAyi I took .CR2 samples from Imaging Resource in DPP. I noted a dramatic differences between "High Quality" vs "High Speed" setting in the Preferences. If you want all detail in 5D III images in DPP, select High Speed!

I think It is a Canon-specific issue rather than a general post processing issue I am looking for feedback from other owners to eliminate the possibility of a bad install or accidentally having a beta software in my hands

wow! you are right. but with "high speed selected" NR sliders are greyed out, I can't activate the chroma NR anymore!

Why doesn't it just work the old way

Well looks like with "moire reduction off" you can get the correct rendering of the 5D3 CR2's but as soon as I apply chroma NR the details get smeared as if it is applying heavy luminance NR-not good.

will need to bring this to Canon's attention.

The good news is that the ACR beta does an excellent job with the 5DIII RAW files. I'm really liking the camera so far!

I have a weird feeling they were scared by the D800 sensor so they try to make high ISO appear to have less noise.... And they seem to be obsessed with NR over detail in general more than ever these days. The video mode is reported to still be a far cry from 1920x1080 and to be smeared but with less noise. All of their website samples look horrendous, like wax paintings for fear of showing noise.

I just hope this is a bug and not an informed decision. It is a very bad approach to force NR in your own software and they never did this before, even for the 7D which holds the crown for noise.

Bryan Carnathan has noted the same thing in his 5D3 review page:

Thanks Aravind, I contacted Rudy at ITCG to see what Canon have to say to this. It wouldn't surprise me though, if they were totally unaware themselves

PS. looks like the forecast is rainy for tomorrow but I might still come to Byxbee, haven't been shooting in the elements for a while

It just amazes me that all the beta testers and the "pros" who field tested these cameras never notice fundamental issues like this.
