Local craigslist got one for sale. I was wondering what you guys have to say about this lens ?
Asking price is 1K - is that a fair price ?

Personally I would love to try this lens for expertise and for history on this lens. Not many review left on the net so I come here for knowledge

Let me know what you guys know / think about this lens.

P.S.
I will send PM to NikkorAIS ( aka Gregory ) about his lens

That is an impossibly low price for this lens. Bjorn rates it at 4.5 on his scale of 5. KEH has a LN- copy for $4,459. It weighs about 12 pounds so you'd need a sherpa to carry it for you and a sturdy tripod...

Yes, Gregory had a copy of this lens. Here's some more information about the lens from the site in Malaysia.

http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/companies/nikon/nikkoresources/telephotos/800mm.htm

I'm not into lenses this long, but boy does that look like a steal for someone who is. Let us know if you go for it. I'd love to see some photos.

And by the way, Andy from Austria who often posts on the Nikon forum has this lens, as well as a few other big guns. He'd be a great resource as well. Here's a link to a thread he recently initiated on the D4. You can send him a PM.

If the lens is in reasonable shape that is one very good price. I think there is a lot of people here that would purchase it.

I am defensively going after this one. I am going to take a look at this "monster" as soon as I can.

CGrindahl thank you for information. I have seen mir.com page as well. I do have nice tripod for this thing in case I can get it - maybe need new head.

I will keep you all posted in this lens will be mine or not.

For now off you Gregory and Andy for some feedback !!!

I have seen the lens for $3,200 to $3,500 in ebay, That price looks fishy. Those ridiculous low prices in Craiglist and 99% are scams.

Be careful - 1,000 is about 1/3 of what it should be. Have someone else carry the cash - blocks away - meet in broad daylight - with lots of people in the coffeeshop. I'd hesitate anywhere else......

I have one - near mint - cost me 2,400. A fuggly one should bring in 1,800+ at today's prices.

Either the seller has no idea what he has, or it's a scam. I mighat be comfortable meeting in the police station.

Certainly a scam. I actually followed up on the same thing in the past just for grins because I knew it was a scam and sure enough it was. Unless the lens is BROKEN you're not going to see one at that price. Mine is in almost perfect condition and I doubt I would sell it for less than $4K.

Oleg, I am suspect to tell you about this lens since I love it.
This price you found is a steal, but be aware as others have pointed out.

The lens construction is first class like almost all MF Nikkor ais & ai-s.
The focus ring is large and easily moved with a finger, butter smooth. In the viewfinder of D3/D700 focus is easier, but I have had succes with the D300/D7000 too.
The CA, as in most of the older telephotos in the digital age, sometimes is visible in harsh light conditions, but can be fixed in NX2 or PS. By the way, I think this 800mm f/5.6 EDIF ai-s has slighlty less CA wide open and it is slighlty sharper wide open than the 600mm f/5.6 EDIF ai-s, which I have too.
You have to use a good tripod, and for better results and easy of use I would suggest a gimbal head.
For this price, if confirmed and in good condition, you have nothing to loose. Even if you decide to sell the lens in the future you will profit at least 100%, since this lens is sold usually in the range of US$2000.00-4000.00.

Some samples for you without and with TCs (already posted in the MF Nikkors thread):

This "bird" was around 3 km away:

800mm + TC14E=1120mm by labecoaves, on Flickr
Nikkor 800mm f/5.6 AIS EDIF with TC14EII = 1120mm f/8.

This couple was at 120m:

_DTR1662dpreview by labecoaves, on Flickr
Candid shot of a couple , D300 + 800mm f/5.6 ais + TC14A = 1120mmf/8
ISO640, no crop, couple at ~ 120m. I know, I know, TC14B is the correct TC according to Nikon, but this "wrong" TC14A works!

Fireworks at more than 300m:

Fireworks 800mm ais EDIF f5.6 by labecoaves, on Flickr
Nikkor 800mm ais f/5.6 EDIF. Fireworks detail, New Year 2012; 15 s exposure at f/16.

Moon with 2 TCs = 1904mm lens!:

Moon shot with a 1904mm telephoto by labecoaves, on Flickr
Nikkor 800mm f/5.6 ais EDIF + TC17EII + TC14A + D3 = 1904mm f/13.
We need a sturdy tripod + Mirror lock up + 10 s to wait any vibration finnish.
Exposure was 1/50s at f/22. Some levels adjustments; ~30% cropped, resized to internet and a small pass of smart sharpen 50 x 0.2 px.
For my surprise the image appears more than usable.

A bird "portrait" or "macro" at minimum focus distance:

Sayaca Tanager "portrait" with a 800mm. by labecoaves, on Flickr
Nikkor 800mm f/5.6 EDIF, at MFD 8m. With D7000 an effective 1200mm.
Note the thin DOF even at f/11; no crop. ISO 1250, 1/60s, fill flash at 1/8 power.

and the last with the new TC20EIII = 1600mm f/11:

Pale-breasted Thrush - 1600mm lens by labecoaves, on Flickr
D300 + Nikkor 800mm f/5.6 ais + TC20EIII (= 1600mm f/11)+ Tripod. The bird was at ~ 22m. MLU+ cable release, f/16(8), 1/160s, ISO 640. ~ 5% cropped.
The new TC appears to work well in the old lens.

If you need more samples take a look at my flickr.
Good buy!

Jose has just given you a preview of the attractions that await on the Nikon Manual Focus Glass thread. He's the only person at the moment posting images from this lens, but Nikon made a great many spectacular lenses before the advent of AF. This one may be a scam, but there are a great many MF lenses available at ridiculously low prices...

I am with you when it comes to scams on stuff like that.
Believe or not but its real lens and its not a scam I dont think seller knows what he got so far.
Since I am second in line for purchase I have arranged for viewing ( no cash with me ) just to see what he has to offer. I will let you guys know how that will go.

I hope first person realities that its MF focus and back away

My strategy is simple - VERY populated place, mall with police station in it + I never bring cash with me. I look at goods, try them, and then we go to back and I get cash. That way even if it is scam I have nothing on me to lose

Thank you for your concern guys - I have seen many of those to good to be true deals I always bug those people too just to waist their time

OMG !!!

After this I want this baby even more Thank you very much for feedback and sample photos !! For what I can get this thing I dont think getting gimbal will be a problem. Also I dont think I will not like this lens at all !!! In addition, having piece of history in my hand will be nice as well - there are only around 3000 of those out there

+10 I was thinking the same thing. Meet in a very very public place, bring a friend ... a big one, and don't have the cash on you ... have someone else carry it who you can call over once you are sure it is legit.

Great price if real and the lens is in good shape .... I'd spring for the lens at that price.

Just noticed the time of your last post. SO! Any update? It's been 1/2 a day ... I hope you are OK ...
