p.1 #1 · Ditching the 5d2 and x100 for NEX and M/43, need lenses for both

I've gotten to the point where I've decided to move on from the 5d2. My primary use was for video production, so I bought a 24-105L and the ZE 21, 35, 50mp &100mp. I find that I rarely shoot stills with it because its a pain to lug around, so I bought an X100 as a "carry it with me at all times" camera with my favorite 35mm FL. I just find the fixed lens a little limiting at times, and the x100 a little frustrating at times ... its all gonna go. I also have a NEX 5 and the video on the 5n and 7 outclasses it big time, so I'm upgrading to a newer Nex kit.

I've been mixing video from the 5d2 in with a GH2 and the Panny (hacked with a higher bitrate) is as good or better in all cases, crop factor is the only limitation. Everyone that pays the bills has been happy with the video so no worries about the swap. I'm ordering a Nex7 for stills and flash photography since I have to shoot stills alongside video on occasion. I want to be able to use a flash and go wider than m43 will allow at times. It'll also serve as my "b" cam to the GH2.

My other motivation is the fact that in 2 years from now my wife and I are quitting our jobs and taking a year-long trip around the world. I need a compact cam that shoots good stills and video so I'll be sorting out my kit between now and then. I spent a month in South America in 2009 and I had a separate still cam and HDV cam. The pair combined with chargers, batteries, tapes and such was about 1/3 of the 20 pounds of clothes and gear I had for the trip. I want to use the same backpack (light, durable, fits in the overhead) and keep the weight the same, less camera means a little more clothes.

Anyway, I'm looking for some fast manual glass that will play nice with both. I want to replicate most of the FL's that I have with the ZE's and pick up a few AF lenses for lazy shooting days. I plan to carry a camera and lenses in a small bag everyday and shoot so I get into the habit of actively shooting everyday - something I don't do as much as I should right now.

Lenses I have -- Samyang 14/2.8, C/Y 28/2.8, 35/2.8

Lenses considering for both -- CV 12 or 15mm, CV 35/1.2, ZF 21/2.8 (shoots stunning video, almost positive I'm getting another), C/Y 35-70, Canon FD 24/1.4, 50/1.2 & 85/1.2 (can get a smokin' deal on all three)

For Nex only -- Sony E 50/1.8, Sony E 24/1.8, Sony 18-55 kit (with the Nex7)

For M43 only -- Oly 12/2, 45/1.8, Panasonic 14-140 (kit with GH2, stabilized zoom for video)

Obviously I won't be hauling big DSLR lenses with me when I travel, its more for paid video shoots when I take a trunk full of gear with me. I'm looking for other prime and short zoom options, ZM's are a possibility but I can't find much with them on M43 cameras. The Nokton 17/0.95 and 25/0.95's are on my radar as well, but I'd like to try and find something that goes both ways. I know I'm all over the map, maybe I need to chart this out a little better to find what suits my needs. After unloading my kit I should have somewhere in the $7-8,000 range to spend so there's a lot of flexibility.

I've had nothing but Canon since the film days, this will be the first time I will own cameras and none of them will be Canon - sigh of the times I guess. Just a little undecided about which way to go.

Wide is a problem right now on the NEX-7 and perhaps always will be. The 5N is much better off but no flash hotshoe is a deal breaker for me as well except as a toy.

I think a Panasonic 7-14mm with OM-D is a fantastic wide solution and paired with the NEX-7 + new E-Mount lenses probably great.

Don't think the CV ultra wide will work well on m4/3 either. The Oly 12/2 is a good lens, the Oly 9-18 is incredibly compact and decent. So you are ok with the size of Samyang on small body? Some of the lens you are considering for both are pretty big and not very comfortably balanced on small body.

For small M lens if you can endure the slow buffer, Ricoh GXR-M gives much better result as a still cam than m4/3, especially for wide M lens.

To me, the Oly 9-19 is a nice lens, but nothing really special and kind of ho-hum.

The Panny 7-14 is system envy worthy.

I suspect that in 2 years when it's time for your trip, there may be better alternatives - GH3 or 4!, NEX-9 or whatever - so if it were me, that would not enter into my decision too much right now.

It sounded like you are happy with the GH2 except for a wide solution which I don't quite follow since there is the Panasonic 7-14 and the Olympus 9-19 mentioned above.

I missed the two wide zooms, sounds like I should pick one up. I will likely carry something other than what I have now, but I can start getting my lens lineup sorted now. I've been planning to move out of the 5d2 since last fall. After shooting with the GH2, I decided to get one for video and find something a little more portable to replace the Canon. I tried with the X100 - swing and a miss for me. The Nex-7, EM-5 and to some degree the Xpro1 tick more boxes. The fun will be finding what works best for me. Like many, I would ultimately like to see the 16mp 5n sensor in a 7 body. Please Sony make it happen with the new Nex-3 18mp sensor!

p.1 #7 · Ditching the 5d2 and x100 for NEX and M/43, need lenses for both

Many questions I'll only touch a few. I have the Samyang 14/2.8 and while it's a great lens (and fast for a WA) I have the CV15 high on my list just because of size. It wont do better I'm sure, but small is important. From what I have read the CV15 does better than the 12.

And since you mention the CV35-70, maybe you should give the CV28-85 a look too. Particularly given that the cropfactor makes the 28 more useful as a almost wideish start compared to 35. Just got that lens for the 5D2 and it's a great performer rivaling the 35-70. I havent put it on the NEX5N yet, but the 28mm start was part of the reason I did some research on that lens before going for the more well known and widely spread 35-70. If you like take a look in the Zeiss thread which I recently spammed with images from the 28-85.

Personally, I would not want to have two system which are rather similar. I'd concentrate on MFT because it has a larger lens base and can offer great IBIS with the OM-D E-M5.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

I use both current cameras (5d2, Nex5) shooting video at the same time for cutaways and such, the video specs on the EM-5 are kind of like Fuji's - just an afterthought. I need more framerates. Its a shame with both Oly and Fuji - such great JPEG's - the video could really be something special it they would make it a priority. If not for the GH2 hack, I wouldn't even think about parting with the Canon, but the mega-bitrates are capable of producing some great video.
