Just agreed on exchanging my MP100ZF for a D21ZF. I haven't put my MP100 to much use (the length is not for me) so I know it's the right thing to do right now (lenses should never collect dust), but I know I'll have instances I'll regret it as well. Especially since I'll have only 85mm as my longest Zeiss.
I don't know why exactly why I'm posting this, maybe therapy. Feel free to use this thread to calm my nerves, it would be much appreciated

85 is probably long enough. There's not all that much difference between 85 and 100 really. And if it's the macro you think you might miss an extension tube or close-up filter can do nicely.
If I had to flesh out a total system in primes I would probably skip 100mm. I guess it would go:

Funny you posted this. I just today decided to sell my Contax 645 Makro Planar. If you're like me it took some time to save up for the MP100 ( I also had to get a NAM-1 and wait several months for the conversion to EF mount). Non-trivial decision to part with the lens for sure. I also found the focal length to be one that I used much less than others. Hopefully you'll miss the MP100 much less than you enjoy the new D21.

That is the way forward! As long as you get the right price and do not buy new you can always buy it again later. I used to have it, but it was too long for me. If I win in lottery, I will buy it again .

I think I saw your MP in the ads (blocket) a while back. Hard to sell? Anyway, a lens you put to good use is better than a lens collecting dust.
I don't imagine it's very hard to sell, it's down to asking price and I did put it quite high as I really didn't want to sell it for less (I'd rather keep it).
Otoh, us gear-nerds do perhaps over estimate the markets appreciation/knowledge of Zeiss glass. Perhaps most amateur photographers don't put that much value in glass (or MF primes), but are still counting the megapixels.

My kit is 21-35-50 for several years now already so don't feel strange that 85 is your longest lens
Sometimes I think about adding something longer, but everytime I put that thought on hold because I'm undecided about which one I would want. 85 or 100MP. Both are appealing.

Which 50 do you have, Jochen? If you have the 50P and would like more of the same, get the 85. If you have the 50MP and would like more of the same (except more CA and a nicer rendering), get the 100MP. If you would like to switch it up, cross over. I think I will end up with both 50s and 85 AND 100.

I have the 50MP.
I know the different rendering styles and the way you put it is also how I try to make a decision.
Problem is that sometimes I prefer the punchier MP rendering, sometimes the more gentle planar (which is closer to the style of my 35/1.4).
Because I appreciate them all I would also end up with both 50s, 85 and 100 but I don't want to. I prefer a smaller kit. That's also why I decided to sell my 35/2 after I got the 1.4

Do you have an idea what you would use the longer lens for? Note that the 85P does get quite punchy when stopped down a bit, so it might give you both in one. And the 100MP is more gentle wide open than the 50MP, so it also approaches this.
Ultimately I think the 100 is the better lens, but as I said, I will probably end up with both. I don't think I will carry both on a single day though. I would decide when I go out.

I would use it for all kinds of things, walkaround/landscape/people/...
The 100 sure is the better lens technically. With the 85 you'll have to deal with the focus shift.
In the end only one thing matters to me though and that's how the images look. Right now I think I prefer the 85. It looks really nice stopped down (and still different than the MP).
I don't think I could go wrong with either, it's just a matter of choosing Luckily I'm not in a hurry.

I've often observed that the 85 seems specifically designed for people photography (portraits) and the 'faults' it may have are trade-offs for other things such as bokeh and skintones (no surprise here). The MP100 is o/c not designed primarily for portraits (which doesn't mean it can't do them!) but for macro work hence the almost hysterical contrast, sharpness and colour rendition.
It's, as always, a matter of choosing the right tool for the job.
