Oops, I don't know what happened there. But here is Part 2 of my previous post.

Thanks again.

Carl

P.S. Anyone that has any race track/drag racing photgraphy experience feedback would be greatly appreciated. I hope to someday get NHRA Cred's (I know, very optimistic).

I just love the smell of Nitromethane in the morning!

I haven't shot drags...yet...but I'm thinking a shot like the orange Nova, I would want to slow the shutter speed way down, maybe around 1/125 to 1/60, to catch the motion in the blower drive. Maybe shoot in shutter priority set to a slow speed, lower the ISO to keep the aperture close to what you want, and then maybe go to aperture priority with a wide set point to get some background blur and bring the ISO back up to maybe 400 and get a faster shutter speed for some othe shots.

I think some that shoot these guys more often could give you better advice backed up by some "been there, done that" that I can.

Sure would like to see a pan at 1/60th or so on a 300mph object passing near by

Pretty good shots IMO

Jefferson,

Thanks for taking the time and passing along some great info. I need to get pointed in the right direction. It's been years since I actually understood what, why and when (I used to develop my own pics back in the day) a very long time ago. Now I'm getting back into it and am brushing up on the basics again, and as fast as I can.

Thanks again. I will try out your suggestions when I go out the next time. in a few weeks.

Have a nice evening!

Carl

Just curious Carl. Why would you shoot a Mustang when there's a bitchin' 68 Camaro at 2 o'clock? I have a slight bias, mind you.

Try walking down the track a little to get a pan, Jeffer's suggestion would work there. The dragsters are tough to stop.

Then you might like to try a manual focus on the line at SS60 cam still and get the racers in speed blur (continuous mode). Good luck with the dragster I couldn't get a whole one in a frame

Hey Rags,

Thank you for the input. We're practically neighbors! I'm right off of Peninsula Ave. We should hook up for a cup of coffee sometime at Starbucks or Peets on the Ave.

As far as getting further down the track is going to be pretty tough. I got the growl the last time I went out, as I didn't realize I was breaking some of the rules (NHRA stuff). I don't have enough lense to make it from the stands either. But I'll keep trying.

You have some great shots. Thanks for sharing your link. I have never had any luck trying to catch them running down the track. I either get the front of them or their back side (sometimes nothing at all). Besides I like the burnouts and when they come out of the hole the most. Especially the alcohol and nitro cars, with their pipes all lit up. Tom D had posted some nice shots too. I like his work.

Keep in touch and thanks again for the feedback.

Have a nice day.

Carl

sounds good, I'm up for that. I'm hiking into Bryce tomorrow then shooting tennis in the desert; maybe a couple of weeks out

Carl,
Now I know how you got your user name ...... There's nothing like the smell of Hydrocarbons and the sound of big lobes with lots of overlap!

Ralph,

You got that right! Do you ever make it over to the Sacramento Dragstrip? My buddies run over there every once in a while. It would be great to meet you.
