Just when I thought it was safe enough to forget about the 200mm f2 L...hmmm
Your photos do look much like paintings in that series, as stated by my lovely wife (the same one that talked me into the 500mm... ).
Best regards,
Edd
Good evening, Edd....well, I am happy to hear your wife likes those pictures.
However, in a way 200 f/2 IS is similar to 400 DO.......I just can not recommend those lenses to friends like yourself based on the cost/benefit considerations. There are alternatives and substitutes which are much cheaper.
I do appreciate your insights based on your actual experiance, rather than the "vaporware" testimony that I read too often throughout the Internet. I'm sure that many others share my sentiments. Thanks again for posting real world images...I have seen enough test charts/zonal plate images to fillup a dumpster...

Thank you, Edd....I wish I'd follow my own advice more often.

Or, the other possibility Peter, is that both appear somewhat magical...?
Cam, those shots are usually choreographed to some extent: I try to get a nice sort of background as well as a proper light direction into the shots.....those are pretty much fundamentals of any photography. However, much is still left beyond our control......so sometimes a nice atmosphere shot just happens.

Why ? I am not a collector of species or an ornithologist or a birder, I am a gear collector/tester and a photographer.
If I can get a nice brick in flight shot, I'd be happy with it.
A different paradigm.
Why? Well, since you're claiming certain lenses are the best for birds in flight, I thought you might know something about photographing birds. My mistake.

It must be if you do not understand that the Columbidae are birds too.
Have yourself a good night.
