Very interesting thread I've got a 550d superb IQ
I've been told that the 7d is better at high ISO but don't believe it myself

7d is not much different than 60d than T2i in sensor but that ignores:
1) Higher FPS
2) weather sealing
3) better focus
4) micro-focus adjustment
................

You get what you pay for.

According to Canon repair facility, all those cameras share exactly the same sensor (the replacement model nro for sensor for each camera is the same). Difference in JPG quality is due the JPG software in camera, not the sensor. Differences in RAW output is due the quality differences in sensor manufacturing, not the camera model where the sensor is. 2 different 7D:s might have slightly difference ISO quality because of this.

sometimes the read electronics or CFA and AA filter can be different though, so even if the sensor is the same there can be all sorts of differences still

haven't heard reports about vertical gain banding with the 60D or rebel

Hi,

Of those 4, the 60D is the only one that can use the EF-S focusing screen, which allows you to more easily manual focus through the viewfinder. I know that's important to me, making the 60D the best value.

I have heard of people focusing manual shots with the T2i. However, I feel very attracted to the T3i, that is very similar to the 60D. My only predicament with regard to this choice, is that the T3i may not be very good to manual focus with. The T3i is currently 270 usd less than the 60D at B&H. For me, it is just that. That it may not be a good camera for manual focusing.

Kind regards,

igmolinav : ) !!!

I thought this about the 50D and the Rebel xsi back when they were new. Back then the xsi made more sense to me because I didn't KNOW the value of the features... however now only mysteriously understand that the processor from the more expensive camera's images sensor is somehow better

It is funny that I go back even further and see images from my xti and feel that the image processing was somehow better than the xsi (on looks alone)... is it possible that now, in order to sell higher priced cameras by tier, Canon has figured out a way to dumb down equivalent/equal processors to force value on each level of product? ...otherwise we would all buy rebels on image quality alone wouldn't we?

Ok. I see.

I personaly am more interested in the output of the camera and things as AF, noise, speed and build. Not the minor details inside this blackbox.
So many parts inside it makes you dazzle!

Try the camera's in a store or rent them. Do some extensive testing, make a few very big prints!
Because at 18 MP I guess you will not see much difference between them at 20 cm by 30 cm prints or smaller.

And then decide what camera fits you the best.

I guess if only looking at the final print, shot at 100 ISO and optimal light and exposure , the T2i will do as good as the 7D. (and come close to 1D series also)

The output is so personal to taste also.
Files and prints from my "old" 5D are so nice for portraits, technical my 5dMKII is better in all aspects. Still I love my old 5D!

Why not rent both and see what you like better. There's a lot more to a camera than the sensor. For one, there's how it feels in your hand. Personally, I hate the ergonomics of the Rebels. Too small and toyish.

From DPR:

The 550D uses a new, 18.7 (total) megapixel sensor that's similar, but not exactly the same as the one featured in the 7D (according to our sources at Canon). As before the sensor uses high frequency vibrations to remove dust.

I will check the IQs tomorrow
