I had no problem focusing various birds in flight on Saturday with 7D & 400mm F5.6 lens
eagle, flicker, blackbird, various fast ducks, geese, sandhill cranes
all in flight
using mostly expanded center point
No focus problems noted if I do my part

...the 7D does a good job focusing for $1500, but you are way off on your statement above unless you are talking about shooting a brick wall. Anyone who makes a statement like this has clearly not put pushed an AF system to it's limits.
And even then, you'll have the noise of the 7D which is a deal breaker for many photographers.
