I had a vision of what I wanted to achieve, but the sky and weather did not cooperate. It's a gamble as you don't know until the last few minutes of a sunset if you will suddenly have rays spewing forth under the clouds, lighting up your world with spectacular color and patterns. Well, not the case tonight. Instead I was blessed with freezing rain and encroaching darkness... I thought of making this a black & white but in the end preferred the monotone natural rainy look. Nothing spectacular, unless you count the two hours of complete solitude without another soul around. That's worth something! It's like the credit card commercial - priceless!
Lovely 'scape full of sandstone trolls Craig. What we hope for and what we get are often quite different. Nice lemonade result. I would like to see it in BW..."tarted up" a bit of course.
I have a confession Craig - when I saw the title all I could think of was camping trips my wife and I used to take around the Canyonlands area. We would always make a point of spending a night at Goblin Valley sometime during the trip so we could spend some serious time using the showers at the campground since those were the only ones around
I like the non dusty look to the goblins in this scene as that's actually not the usual view across this basin. The snow capped mountains make a nice backdrop here as well.
You are always looking on the bright side (even when the light doesn't even come out)! This reminds me that we can enjoy nature jsut by slowing down and looking around. We don't always have to come back with a "keeper" to have made the journey worthwhile.
The goblins waited for you to leave before they dared say anything.
Yes, you don't always come home with a killer shot. Really it is about the experience, and I think, trying to capture the feeling.
I just waited and waited, and then it was dark. Really dark.
If you are ever in Ray's Tavern in Green River (getting a burger or pork chops) there is a series of 2002 Salt Lake Olympics pictures on the wall. One was a great capture of Goblin Valley, so I had the idea to go back over there.

Goblin Valley is one of my favorite places in Utah. There's never anyone around and it's amazing to be able to walk between, around, and on most of the "goblins" in the park.

It is fun to be able to walk amongst the goblins, but I really hope I don't see anyone getting "on" the goblins themselves... Myself, I couldn't do that, it would have the potential for being destructive.
