p.1 #1 · What resolution do you deliver pictures at?

I came across a post from a pretty famous wedding photographer who wrote that he typically delivered pictures no larger than 3000 pixels on the longest side, which translates to 6 mp images (assuming 3000 x 2000), even though he shoots with a 5D2 (21 mp). This got me wondering...what do you shoot with, and what resolution do you deliver digital image files to clients?

Funny I was just about to post the same question. I've been doing 12" x 8" at 300dpi. Overkill?

My clients get print rights up to 8x10 ... so they receive all high rez shots at
3000 px on the long side for optimal printing up to 8x10.

I always do two folders... One web sized, 1000px wide (and named as web), and the other full size....

Why even reduce them to 3000px?? We all know that if you're smart about it you can still print huge from 6mp...

full res (nikon 12mp bodies)
lightroom export with quality dynamically set to keep files under 5mb.

If I was shooting 21mp or 36mp, I would downsize the resolution to 12-15mp and still max of 5mb.

I always deliver in web res and high res.

Web res is 720px and has a small watermark.

High res, I used to deliver in 3000x2000 but now usually 10 or 12MP depending on how I thought the day's photos came out. (e.g. noise or maybe higher than normal slightly OOF images would mean I would deliver in the lower res.)

I always thought 6MP would be large enough to make any enlargement due to standing back further to view an image the larger it is printed.
Back in the days, plenty of poster sized prints were made from 20D files.

I don't understand why you guys are down-rezing. You're hoping they come and buy greater-than 8x10 prints from you?

I just give 'em full-rez images (no down-sizing), wish them a happy life, and move on to the next in the assembly line.

It's easier to plug in a flat number into lightroom on export and it creates a sense of uniformity especially if you had to crop some images slightly.

Whenever I've done a disk for someone I've done web (850px, watermwark), 7x5 and then full res. The full res ones are all over the places though, so I think going with 6MP would make sense, thanks for the tip.

hi... I make web version 850 on the longer size and high res version 1500 on the longer. this is due to keep all the photos in 1 disk. But photos that get printed usually get full res.

I live in Bangladesh where people do not print more than 6 X 4. However if they want more than 6 X 4 they can always contact me.

Hmmm... Seems u all provide it in 3000 in longer side. Wondering if I am making any mistake or not. but so far no body complained....

Regards,
Sadat

+1 and also if you're shooting with cameras that have different resolutions (D700, D300 and D7000 in my case).

I don't see any problem with lack of uniformity in dimensions.

I was doing full-res until this post! lol I got tired of 2-3 discs for each event off of my full-resolution files. So now, 3000 max at 300 ppi. But I'm also gonna create full resolution for my online galleries so clients can order massive prints if they like.
