p.1 #1 · Canon 5D II, Keep or go

Might be answering my own question on this one.

So I have not been impressed with my 5D since I bought it. I love my 50D in comparison, just seems to take better pictures to me. So what are the thoughts out there, maybe it just the way I use it. Maybe I thought it would be more camera. Thought even about getting rid of it and getting a 1 D2 or maybe a 7D.

Just really torn with this one, maybe my expectations are too high. I have read all the other posts so my struggle continues.

Do a BIG print, the same lens, view (almost) shot from each camera. That should help you see the better camera and I'm making the assumption you shoot raw. If not it could be you need to play with the in camera settings on the 5d2.

I thought it was a 5Dc vs. 50D debate (which still was a no brainer)....but 5D II vs. 50D....c'mon..

How long have you had it? What do you shoot with it?

I've owned a 20D and a 40D before jumping on a 5Dc and I've never looked back. I still have a goal of getting one as a backup.

I shoot weddings as a hobby (I second shoot for a friend) and I had the 5Dc and 40D together for a while. Files were always better from my 5Dc.

Had to sell both bodies to upgrade - to answer your question, if you're unhappy with the 5Dc, I don't think the 5DII will impress you that much more. The 7D might be a better upgrade for you. Try it before deciding.

I guess it depends if it's more important to have leading-edge technology (for Canon, cough), or best-in-class image quality. I like the tech as much as anybody, but I recently sold my 7D and bought a 5 D MkII, and wouldn't go back.

I'd take a serious look at why you like your 50D images better. Is it because you use it more?

Ew.

It only took me 2 weddings of trying to use my 50D as a "2nd" body as opposed to a "backup" to realize how awful the images look side by side the 5DII...

Are you sure your body is not faulty in some way?

If you're printing small or viewing web sizes, dropping your 5d is perfectly reasonable IMO.

I'm hoping this would be "just kidding" thread.
I couldn't be happier with the IQ on my 5dII.
Sold my 1DIII (great camera with no focus issue)
2years ago to fund for 5dII and have never looked back.

You must be kidding... the images from the 5DII are most definitely superior to the 50D.

I choose the 50D for action shots at race tracks but for everything else, the 5DII is the weapon of choice, I can see the difference even at monitor-sized pics.

The 50D was not renown for its IQ. The later 18MP T2i beats it rather nicely in the IQ field.

As Jeff said, try to determine what it is you like about the 50D images and find out how to produce it with the 5D2.

Where did you go?

From your website it looks as if the majority of your work is people/portraits/natural light. I'm lost as to why you would prefer the 50D over the 5DMKII for this type of photography. What lenses are you using? How long were you shooting with a crop camera before the 5DMKII? Is it the difference in field of view you don't like or the image quality itself?

I agree with the other posters.

I have a 7D and a 5d2; I use the 7D for sports/wildlife, and the 5d2 for everything else. Occasionally, I take photos of the same thing with both cameras, and I'm always amazed at just how much better the IQ is on the 5d2 than on the 7D.

Absent something really wrong with your 5d2, I cannot believe that the IQ of any 50D is better than the IQ on a "normal" 5d2.

Doesn't photoshop have an add noise function? Still, the 50D has a lighter body weight, cross type outer AF points, and a higher frame rate. Can't think of anything else "better". They're contemporary bodies so body features should be fairly equivalent.

Same here with one exception..... I'm often amazed at what the 7D can do for the price point. IMO the 5DII IQ is better than the 7D but not by all that much. Both cameras have their strengths. Either way I wouldn't want to go back to a 50D.
