p.1 #1 · Thoughts on the Tamron 24-70 F/2.8 Di VC USD

I have trimmers and have to have IS so the Canon 24-70 F2.8 L II is out of the question but the new Tamron lens looks interesting for me. Any thoughts?

I don't see the price or delivery date. It seems to be a premature announcement, perhaps coinciding with the new Canon.

someone who went to the show said that all they had was some fake looking mockup looked away in a glass case and no hint of release date

Hope for those interested that its better than the 17-50 VC upgrade. All accounts say the non-VC is better.

After it is available for sale, I am sure it will beat by far sales numbers for Canon's new 24-70.

Well of course it will, becaue the Tamron will be relatively cheap and produced in multiple mounts.

I believe only regarding one mount (e.g. Canon) it will sell a lot better, too. Even Canon's new 24-70 might be a notch better in border sharpness and contrast, it is too expensive and lacks IS what many desired in this kind of zoom lens. I predict Canon's new 24-70 will sit on the shelves for a while - at least until Canon releases a D800 equivalent camera which can make use of higher resolution lenses.

no need for a new camera, even on a 5D2 the borders get rough at 24mm with the current 24-70/105 zooms.

I don't have this problem with my 24-70.

I went through a couple versions of the 24-70 before I gave up. I mainly shoot primes, but it was nice, on occasion, to avoid changing lenses - which sometimes means missing an opportunity. The Tamron 28-75 is my only non-Canon lens and after sending it in for a calibration, it has been an excellent performer for a few years now. I prefer the specs on the new Tammy 24-70 and will likely get that over the new Canon iteration.

I keep thinking of switching to Sony to get in-body IS (among other features Canon has no excuse for not incorporating). A stabilized 24-75mm might keep me in Canon, assuming I can afford it. The latest lens announcements has me REALLY tempted to jump ship. What a let down.

you're either lucky, i gave up after two copies, or less picky about things or maybe shooting things that luckily fall more naturally into the field curvature

I had the Canon 24-70 but picked up a Tamron 28-75 on a very good deal. After comparing the two and the weight differences, I ended up selling the Canon and have had the Tamron for years now. It's my only non-Canon lens (non-L for that matter). It has done its job well. Mainly based on its performance, I'm interested in the new Tamron. If the image quality is as good or better, I'll be picking one up. Canon has gone insane on their prices.

The Tamron sure looks more interesting than the 24-70 L II but I'm afraid they won't be able to get it done and shipping to get the cream of the early adopters. However those for whom IS is a make or break - like myself - are probably going to wait patiently for the Tamron.

Which reminds me that I need to sell my 24-85 in the meantime.

I have the 28-75 and had always planned to sell it for the Canon 24-70 2.8. It's not a bad lens or anything, I just figured the L was better. But having never used the L, I can't say.

Anyway, a stabilized tamron is very intriguing. I'll probably hang back and let the early adopters figure out if it's good or not. But if it's a good value I'll be taking a hard look.

p.1 #18 · Thoughts on the Tamron 24-70 F/2.8 Di VC USD

A number of years ago I had a Canon 28-70 f/2.8 'L' and Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 at the same time. The Canon has been recently serviced by Canon so we can assume it was functioning as well as it could.

I tripoded my 30D and made pix of the same static subject (time delayed release with mirror locked up) with both lenses at the same zoom settings and f-stops. I was very surprised that the Tamron was consistently better (clearer) wide open and it took the Canon until f/5.6 to catch up.

Sooooo . . . I'm very interested in the Tamron 24-70. I spoke with Tamron U.S. yesterday about it. The tech with whom I spoke had shot with a test copy and was very impressed with the quality of the files it produced. Said it didn't seem as large as the 82mm filter would suggest, primarily because it was relatively light. Also said they think it will start shipping "in the Spring"; I assume he meant this year.

I only have Canon lenses BUT I am looking forward to seeing this in the hands of some of you guys.

If I remember correctly some of the criticism of the 28-75mm f2.8 XR Di was slow focus in low light which is a no goer for me - so fingers crossed.

I also want something in the next 6 months.

Yes, I had the 28-75 and the 17-50 from Tamron. Both were optically excellent, but struggled a bit to focus in low light. Perhaps this newer version will focus better in low light with Tamron's version of USM.
